What mushroom is this? Found in western Iowa. Around 70 degrees. Multiple in one location. Thick stem.

Edibility is debated right? What's your opinion?

pretty good indicator of morel habitat, usually i see these starting a few weeks before morels pop up but gyromitra seems like it shows up in more places/types of habitat they'll be there any day now

I'd dry it and cook it 😀 They're delicious. Well, gyromitra species in general, haven't tried this one. But some people get poisoned so it's not recommended any longer. Quite popular in parts of Europe.

we just said don't fucking eat that.
the toxin is accumulative you probably wouldn't notice until you're dead
here I'll put it a little more bluntly:
DO NOT EAT GYROMITRA MUSHROOMS!

I know, I know 😀 But I like them. And they're a delicacy here. I'm not eating a lot of them, just a few every other season. If I won't notice until after I'm dead, I'm fine with it 😁 Won't recommend it to others, though.

It's true that the Genus has edible mushrooms but if they are not properly prepared and cooked you risk poisoning, so we do not recommend anyone eat them.

To answer your question, yes, Gyromitra can grow side by side with Morels.
