PC'ing corn on the barbecue

Well.....the wife had been complaining about the “noise” from my pressure cooker in the house, so I decided to try the only other thing I had to use. Was not going to work until I put foil down to direct the heat the the bottom of the PC. Now it’s working great! Not the most ideal. Wish I could just do it on the kitchen stove, but no.
PC'd 7 jars and two myco bags of corn the other day, and then inoculated some of them with spore syringes, and some of them with agar wedges from various strains I have been working on isolating. Now PC'ing another 7 jars of corn.

If your cooker is making noise. Stop. Read the manual. And then do it the right way.
The rocker weight shouldn't be noisy. You turn the heat down.

Yeah, our house is not that big, and with everyone being stuck mostly at home during these strange times, and yeah, the dang Presto starts making noises long before the weight ever goes off. But yes, I am still learning how to get the heat adjusted just right. I finally kind of was getting used to the settings on our kitchen stove to keep it where it needs to be, not constantly blowing off steam, but now the barbeque is a whole new animal and it is proving a little more difficult to get the heat setting right. But I will keep experimenting with it.

If I turn the heat down where it isn't noisy, the pressure goes to about 14psi. I prefer it to sit at nice 16-17psi.
I'm using a 24l presto

I'm pretty sure it was Bodhisatta I saw suggest taping a couple quarters to the weight, let it start to jiggle (which indicates that it's over 15 PSI since it has extra weight) and turn it down just enough to stop rockin and you should still be at or slightly over 15 PSI.
I had the same trouble with my wife not liking the noise and also have a Presto and that took care of it

Oh very cool! Yes I could see how that would work! Thanks! Yeah my wife is a full time college student right now, and normally she takes her school work to a coffee shop or something during the day, but lately with there being no public places for her to go, she's been having to stay home. And I work from home, and like to do a little mycology here and there between work, which in this case means needing to prep some corn, and the other day she came out and was all irritated that it was hard to focus with that damn "noise" in the kitchen. I need to just get a really good standalone burner so I can do my pressure cooking in the garage where I have everything else set up.

Nice! Something like that is exactly what I think I need! The electric standalone single burners seem to not be all that great. I had ordered one, but then noticed the description said that it was not suggested to use it for more than like 30 minutes at a time. Not to mention that it's measly 1100 watts would probably not do me any good. So I started looking at those propane powered ones just like the one you bought. I'm thinking I really need to acquire one since I am so serious about this whole mushroom cultivation thing and it is clearly going to cause problems trying to do it in the kitchen.

Sorry Bod, I think you're in the wrong here. I can't hold it above 15psi without rattling regardless of how much I try tweaking the temp.
And no, adding coins to the weight isn't in the manual.

If you run it at 14.99999 it will be basically whisper quiet. I wrote my guide in full knowledge that people do it wrong like clockwork. Since everyone wants to actually see that dial hit 15+ psi put a quarter on the weight leave it at 15-16 with no noise and be happy.

For sure. I was gonna say, my Presto is way quieter than my All American was. That AA weight jiggling sounded like someone ringing the dinner bell in a western movie lmao. With the Presto, you get a little hiss and maybe some water sputtering once in a while, but I was surprised how quiet it is.

Tape a quarter on. 16psi dead silent on low. It's really that easy.

Just gotta find the sweet spot for your stove. I turn it up to high, let the air purge, put the weight on, get it up to pressure, then on my stove exactly on medium keeps it 15 psi without jiggling the weight.
Putting a quarter on the weight to let it get to 16 isnt gonna help if you cant hold it stead at 15. All about finding that sweet spot on the knob.

Just tried that out. Put 5g worth of magnets on the weight and it sits nicely at 16psi while being silent. Thanks everyone!

Just build a 2nd story onto your house and sit upstairs while it cooks in your kitchen, works great for me!
