Mornin'. This brick from an all-in-one bag smells like hog crap. Are these lil white cotton ball structures yay or nay? This is my first attempt... thanks for taking the time to review and reply!

Hog duce probably smells better than that thing looks my friend:)
The white parts are probably cube mycelium. I don’t know what all that other stuff is but I dont think it’s the good stuff.

Lol... prolly does smell better. Actually, though, it is all white. Lighting made it look yellow.

I think he was referring to all the dark greyish black coloring. Unless you had fruits that dropped spores all over, it doesn't look good

Yeah it’s just a real funny looking picture. Hard to tell what’s going on, especially knowing it’s an All in one and not knowing what is mixed in there. If that’s a layer of dark bulk substrate up top then it’s not as bad looking as if the whole cake was supposed to be a lighter colored material.
Either way though you should never have a really bad smell when growing cubes.
It may be bacterial. Spore syringes often have bacteria in them I’ve noticed. I had to order a few spore syringes because the types I wanted were sold out of prints. Each drop of spore solution I put to agar is growing bacteria. BRF cakes seem to deal well with this for whatever reason but other things not so much.

It looks like it got way dried out and the myc died, and now new myc is popping out. That happened to me my first grow.

Thought it was fucked but it eventually turned into the first picture in my signature.

Update: 5 days later, I have some fruits. The pig-poop odor can still be detected, however it is greatly, greatly diminished. For those trained-eyes out there, what could be happening at the bottom of this block with the mat-like growth?

The thicker mycelium growth is normal hut can be a sign of needing more FAE. Not from fanning but from holes in the tub like a sgfc or holes stuffed with polyfill or micropore taped.

Thanks - I'm going to modify that tub. In looking at your 2nd signature image, I see you have a SGFC, rumfor69. What else do you have going on there tek-wise? I'm intrigued.

That middle pic is gourmet shiitakes growing on supplemented sawdust blocks made the way RR does in his DVD. I used hydroton instead of perlite. There's no holes in the bottom of that sgfc and I just spray it all down a few times a day.
The cubes are just modified, Micropore taped, duck taped dark tubs. Standard coir/verm recipe but sterilized in a boiler steam box I constructed. Been using just under 6 actual quarts of spawn and 12 actual quarts of sterilized coir/verm. Makes a nice easily 4" thick sub. Tape holes, mix tubs, level it, snap lid on, put under 12/2 light cycle, don't open it till I see pins inside. I don't mist, fan, dunk or do anything to my tubs.

Well... my first grow seems successful. A few veils broke overnight. Thanks for the help and suggestions. Now, to continue learning. After some celebration, of course.

Hey rum - I really like the look of those cakes set up off your humidifying layer with wood slats. Would you explain your tek there, please? Any issues with growth from underneath?

Hey thanks, LC! What happens when my long-term hobby meets my brand new hobby. If I can achieve mediocrity at each, I will consider that a huge success!
