Psilocybe cyanescens patch 1

These pictures come from a patch that I've previously had ID'd on here as psilocybe cyanescens. With the recent april showers and cooler temps in northern California, there has been recent fruiting. This patch is where landscaped wood chips butts up against a forest like area that has a lot of wood debris, BlackBerry, and a thick layer of fallen leaves.
My question is why are so many of the immature fruitings bruising blue on the caps. Most of the fruitings are not reaching the full maturity like the pictures I usually see wavy caps get to. Is this because of such a thick layer of leaves it has to push through that the contact is bruising the mushrooms early and stunting the growth?

Nice find. They're probably small and stunted because conditions are less than favorable. This rain has been nice though. You should post this in the california actives thread too.

I've never heard of cyanescens fruiting in the Spring. Are you sure they're not ovoids?

I imagine that they would not normally but we have had a sustained period of lower temps (40-60) with a couple storms over the past 2 weeks. And this is the same patch that I got some cyans from back in november.

they are small Psilocybe cyanescens, outdoor cultivation is what I'm thinking, not wild fruit.

I have found larger ones at this same location back in October/November, which you actually helped me to identify on this forum. It seems like an ideal place for a natural patch with all of the fallen debris that butts up next to the wood chip landscaping. The abundance of shade etc. I dunno, but I took some of the mycelium and wood chips to transplant to a couple spots in my backyard in hopes for fruiting next fall.

I've seen cyans fruit in the spring. The flushes are small compared to the fall/winter, but it does happen. Who can really say what's "natural" vs. "cultivated" in wood chip patches?
