I believe it's a native bolete, with gills instead of pores. I've found quite a few further north in vic under eucalypts. Also, plz don't ask for ID in this thread

Hi Guys, Newbie and want to go picking over the easter break. Has anyone had any luck in the Echuca region? do you find and this far north of the state? Where have people had luck north of Melbourne?

I have been out hunting for the last 5 days in a row in the NE suburbs melbourne, and nothing but inactive shroms. Is it possible that it's too early in the season for this location, or am I still just very bad at hunting? (I feel like I've found 500+ mushrooms of other varieties in the last week...)

Still fairly early and it may take some time in more inner suburb environments.

No reports from there as of yet.
They occur from Tasmania all the way up to Central NSW. Should be some in you area if you hit the right environment. Could be early still.
I've found them as far as Bendigo.

I have heard people say look for eucalyptus woodchips. From my investigations, pure eucalypt woodchips are hard to come by. In Adelaide, i cant find them to buy anywhere except red gum chips. I know there is at least one supplier in Melbourne which sells Eucamulch, The closest thing i have found, probably much more common, is a product called "Leaf mulch" sold by landscape suppliers. Leaf mulch is essentially anything, including eucalyptus, except it depends on the batch. Generally i think it is eucalyptus, acacia and melaleuca but can include ornamental trees or anything thats around. I used to live on a train line, and before i moved out council came, lopped down the trees and put them in the woodchipper. I guess they deemed them unsightly cause they were unmaintained and probably naturally propagated. Afterwards they planted trees in a more manicured fashion. The mulch was mainly the three trees i mentioned. That is what i surmise leaf mulch is. It can include palms or anything though. Pine chips on the otherhand can be bought quite easily, even in the supermarket. Aged woodchips are pretty hard to tell the difference between. The best way is to find the twigs in there to tell what it is. By the way, my point is that what you saw was probably "leaf mulch". Dont know though pure eucamulch might be quite common from deforestation in Gippsland.
Would be interested in anyone who has observations or worked in the council shedding some light on this.
I often find subs growing at the bottom of Eucalyptus trees in Melbourne. Have seen some inactives popping up lately that usually signal the start of the sub season, will have to check some of my spots over the next few days.

Do you reckon we will need a bit more rain before we start seeing active mushrooms?

I am thinking that the main season won't be for a few weeks yet. I am waiting for a few solid days of rain with overnight temps down to 5 degrees before the first big flushes appear. Not much rain on the horizon at this stage and still a bit too warm.

Is it common for active shroms to pop up basically in the exact same spots as others that are a similar type? If so I will inspect the locations I've found so far periodically over the next few weeks.

Sorry to spam with all these questions, but I am learning so much so quickly from you knowledgeable lot.
I noticed at a park the other day amongst a pine needle terrain that someone had sprayed some fluro pink pain in random dots... I know councils in the past have been known to spray poison, but the fluro pink makes me think it is more of an indication for something...
Any ideas?

It's the colour of the indicator dye that the councils mix with glyphosate when they spray weeds in public places. By law they have to use it.
If the habitats you've found look conducive for actives to grow in then you should continue to check them out over the next couple of months. It's the very beginning of the season now with many months ahead. Keep looking in the right places and you will find them.
Also some ground rules for all those following along.
Stop posting about the weather and stop asking if mushrooms have come up in certain locations. It's in our forum rules and all it does it fill the thread with clutter. As the season progresses you will see more finds coming in. If you're wondering then the only way to be sure is go out and look.
