How colonized should it be before casing and fruiting?
    #26560726 - 03/27/20 08:42 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

First grow ever. I have 3 unmodified 6qt shoeboxes in day 12 of 14 colonizing with the lid on. I am about 99% certain that they will not be fully colonized after 2 weeks. I still see a good bit of brown inside. Should I keep the lid on for another week or move to fruiting?

Details,

Genetics are B+. 2 tubs using WBS and 1 tub using shredded brf tek cakes. The substrate is coir verm with coffee and gypsum. The ratio is 1:3 spawn/substrate.

Sorry for the shitty pictures. I don't want to open the lid early.

You can take the lids off to snap pictures, then we'll have a better idea on how to advise you, it won't hurt anything.

If you're growing cubes you don't need to case, but it can help with surface conditions. The ideal time to apply the top layer is as close to 100% colonized as possible.

Thank you. I may skip the casing at this point. I'll update with more pictures in 2 days when I take the lids off. I don't want to lose any co2 are allow any uninvited guests prematurely.

High CO2 saturation to colonize is an old myth, and by virtue of being in tubs there's already contaminate exposure. CO2 levels will quickly return once you put the lids back on, since the growing mycelia are constantly breathing. That being said, it won't hurt anything leaving them like they are for now if you feel more comfortable not touching them.

So this is it after 15 days. The one with little on top was spawned with brf tek. The other two were WBS. Is this mycelium or contamination? The one with nothing on the top is fully colonized on the sides and maybe the bottom. I am not sure what happened to keep them from consolidating.

Any idea why one is bald? I did cover that one with more substrate than the rest mainly because it was given more spawn.

Then that's probably why it's a little more "bald" you only need to
just get them covered and don't have to add more due to a higher spawn
ratio. Just let them sit and wait it's all a learning experience

:shrug:Maybe the brf cake wasn't as strong as the wbs spawn and is colonizing more slowly? Coffee can also cause some trouble if your preparation isn't on point. You do have a lot of substrate to colonize with the ratios you used. I don't see any obvious evidence of contams... I'd just let it be with the lids closed for another week and see where things go from there.

Did you crumble cakes by hand? I ran a BRF tub recently & cheese grated my cakes for maximum inoculation points. It fruited a few days ahead of tubs with wheat.

Was all MS tho so no real science in my findings

BRF was shredded in a cheese grater. Under the top layer of that tub it is pretty solid. If I could flip it, it would look colonized. It's in the sunlight of a window now and domed. I am just going to stay the course of fruiting and use way more grains next time.

just from using a top layer don't worry about it

So after 5 days of fanning 4 times a day and misting once a day there is no visible  change in mycelial growth.
The uncolonized sub feels soft and fluffy like a cake.
I don't think it is too dry. The tubs are getting about 12-14 hours of ambient light per day using sunlight combined with a 6500k led bulb.

Should I see growth by now? Should I  change something?

naw it's ok man top layers often act like a casing layer
