Is it possible to vacuum seal a glass jar?
    #2658181 - 05/09/04 07:44 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

Hi all. I'm wondering if one could use a vacuum jar sealer in order to suck all the air out of the jar. I would reckon this would be a pretty good storage technique. Just an idea...

well instead of trying to get the air out, you could replace it all with CO2, which wouldn't cause any oxidation. you could either use CO2 cartridges or dry ice to do this.. dry ice would probably be easiest. Just put a few dry ice cubes in and don't tighten the lid, the ice will evaporate, and the CO2 will force all of the air out because CO2 is heavier than air, then just tighen the lid and you're all set

they do exist, the ron popiel one on tv all the time comes with a mason jar attachment.
But there are little packets in things like beef jerky ect..I am looking at one right now. They are Oxygen absorbers.I place a my shrooms in a double baggie.rollit up tight and hold together with a piece of tape.the i throw a littlew dessicant and a few of these O2 absorbers in the jar with the shrooms and seal it up good and tight.Ive eaten shrooms a year later wuith no noticable loss of potency.

That's interesting Butternut. I have never seen any of these Oxygen absorbers. What do they look like? And where did you get yours? Did you get yours with beef jerky?

Im sure they can be.I get them in a type of beef jerkey I buy all the time,so I have a bunch.they look just like little dessicant packages, and say Oyxgen absorber right on them.Like I said,I throw a couple of those and some dessicant that I put into the toe of a nylon, and tie shut so it doesnt get all over, into a mason jar, with the double bagged shrooms, and seal up tight and they last for as long as Ive needed them.

heres a link I found telling you about them and showing a picture:
O2 Absorbers

It's not really a problem. Think about this:

Air is about 21% oxygen, so you'll have only a few hundred mLs of oxygen in the jar to begin with. Now for the chemically inclined, remember that a mole of gas at atmospheric pressure occupies 22.4 liters.

This means that at most, you'll only have a few hundreths of a mole of oxygen, which isn't enough to oxidize an appreciable amount of psilocybin/psilocin. So provided you don't constantly open and close the jar and replenish the oxygen supply, you're not losing much of the good stuff.

You can also purge oxy from a jar with r-22 freon ...you have to have a HVAC liscense and a EPA cert to buy freon ....I have both and if i am gonna store any product for a long time i do a freon purge which removes all oxy

yeah my parents have one of those food saver vacuum seal things that you see on the infomercials, i cant think of name name off the top of my head. anyways this vacuum sealer has an attachment that you put over a glass mason jar lid and it sucks all the air out.

this is just a thought that came to my mind i dunno how it will work...

wine bottles have special one way rubber valves you can replace corks with and a pump to suck out the air.... im thinking just put shrooms in a wine bottle if they fit and use the pump and rubber valve???? it wont create a complete vaccuum but it will be much better than just putting it in a simple jar...

That's an intriguing idea berto. Are you sure that it wouldn't create a perfect seal? Doesn't wine have to be perfectly sealed for long term storage?

Ermm, dont people have some issues with PC'ing? If you PC with your lid very tight, and with your innoculation holes(Or in this case, no holes), taped with non breathable tape. When they take it off, it creates a vacuum. So, couldnt he just PC the jars?

No ... that requires heating the jars to a point where the psilo would be destroyed .
The vacumm created this way is from the hot air sealed in the jar (via the lid) cools quickly , thus shrinking causing a vacumm in the jar . Remeber hot air expands , cold air contracts .

I am certed , and that is not a smart idea ...
#1 PFC'S
#2 Oil in the refrigerant can harm digestive system
#3 Harmfull to ozone (when misused)

If you truly have a cert it should be taken from you , becasue you believe in harming the enviro with your choice of misuse of the product .

If true that R22 removes oxy was is it necisarry to vac a system prior to charging with freon ?
Why is o2 harmfull to a compressor for A\C ?

yes you should be able to find the sealer in the housewares section. the machine isn't specifically a vacum canner, its bag vacum sealer that has a canning attachment. so look for that.

i just looked at walmart website and it looks like you can get one on there for $100. but it might cheaper in the store
