Growing Laetiporus sulphureus
    #26581543 - 04/06/20 11:52 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I love chicken of the wood, easily my favourite edible. I've got some time on my hands at the minute and was contemplating giving them a go.
My plan is as follows.
1/ Either clone a wild fruit (involves waiting several months) or start from spores/spawn. Whatever the starting material, I will grow it out on agar and isolate the best looking sectors before a brief spell under fruiting conditions to see if any pins/knots will form in vitro.
If I do see any signs of fruiting at this stage I will transfer one last time to obtain a culture I know will fruit.
2/ Agar to grain. Nothing fancy here, I like popcorn.
3/ Spawn to a mixture of sterilised oak chips and extra coarse grain bran.
I'm planning to try supplementing with grain bran at 30%, 20%, and 10%. I'm concerned that any higher would lead to too high of a moisture content. I settled on those figures after reading a paper investigating the commercial production of Laetiporus sulphureus fruits. They determined that wood chips supplemented with up to 45% grain bran produced best yield. I don't plan on going about 30% and even that seems a bit high.
This would be as blocks, similar to shiitake.
4/ Fruit under natural conditions. Half will be full exposed with the bag removed, and the other half with slits cut in the bag.

Has anyone successfully grown this species, or have any tips about anything really?
I'm open to any suggestions about this experiment as I can only find a handful of useful info, I'm really shooting in the dark on this one.

Thanks for the reply, I actually found both those grows shortly before posting. Other than the paper cited in one of those grows, and the handful of grows themselves, I can't find much. I have a fair few questions for some one with firsthand experience, even if they failed. Like why does every grow/method fruit through the filter? From what I can find, one paper utilised this method and all subsequent grows followed suit. I'll be sure to post my attempts and variations when there's something to show.
