When to Add the Casing Layer
    #26581186 - 04/06/20 08:08 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

What's good guys, just wanted to make a post about when to use the casing layer on your mono tub. The last mono tub I grew, using a pseudo casing when I exposed my tub to fruiting conditions, I used coco coir. Just wanted some extra info towards this in case casing layers aren't worth it or if they are recommended to be used. I had a very nice pin set on my last grow, so by no means am I complaining using one.

Majority of people these days do the pseudocasing when spawning. I had better results in shoeboxes when using one, but I'm just back in the game after a break. Best to do some trial and error and see what works best for you.

Could I ask why you don't case your mono tubs anymore?

I always did this: After 100% colonisation wait 2 days, case, wait 24 hours, fruit. The main issue I think people have with casing monotubs is over colonisation of the casing layer. I always stuck by the principle that pins are meant to form within the casing layer, that it provided a micro-climate ideal for primordia formation. Leaving it longer that a day or 2 after casing will defeat this principle.

Following the monotub tek I apply casing at spawning and put into fruiting conditions immedietly. Casing often remains uncolonized.

Here you can see the casing layer remains uncolonized, without having to monitor tub colonization timing, removing the tub from it's place, applying casing and returning it to it's place, applying casing at spawning illiminates a couple motions.

This was CV roughly 80/20 same stuff I use for substrate. My take on how to cultivate cubes is set and forget.

So would you recommend a casing layer to promote the overall harvest or? Also, very nice grow, what strain?

Yes, without doubt it's a foolproof way to maintain conditions passively. No misting, no fanning. Search: ohmatic monotub Tek from 15 or so years ago. Better surface conditions, better flush.

Texas orange cap is that strain (lmk if you want a print), here's a compilation of tcs talking about casings on cubes

What depth is recommended for the layer?

Like a quarter inch. Also worth mentioning here in terms of getting good flushes is leveling, I am very much ocd about leveling both substrate and the casing separately.

I use a flattening  masonary tool to precisely level. Like $12 from a hardware store.
