Drying Problem?
    #2658111 - 05/09/04 09:24 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

FINALLY success in growing some shrooms and they needed to be dried. Here's what I did:

Took a small tupperware container and put some damprid in the bottom. Unable to get wire, I used a small plastic tray that fit in the tupperware. I punched smaller than dime sized holes throughout the tray for ventilation. Put the shrooms on the tray and the lid on top. Here's the deal... those shrooms have been in there for about 5 days and still aren't "cracker dry." The stems are definitely drying and the caps are shriveling up. My question is, is this normal? How long is it supposed to take? I'm worried about them going bad. I dont have many in there. About 75 grams wet.

Any help much appreciated!

Your damprid is getting full.Thats why its a good idea to dry them partly with a fan first. If you have any more damprid, change it out and by this time tomm, they will be cracker dry.

Butternut squash are softer than acorn or other types of squash, which makes them easier to cut and prepare.

Thank you thank you. Hmm...I notice that two or three smell slightly funky, but I don't see any blackness or signs of molding. I guess they're obviously not going to smell like they did when they were fresh, but is a slightly different odor normal? So sorry...pretty new to all of this. Thanks for the help.

Your welcome.Yes next time if you arent able to fan dry them part way before you do that.At least change the damprid after a day or 2.The used stuff will still work,it just isnt as efficant as it was.The longer the mushrooms contain moisture, the more chance of them going bad.

Use a fan before the dessicants. You may find you don't even need the latter..
