Use of psychedelics in Social Work - Uni advise
    #26580891 - 04/06/20 01:20 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I have returned to study this year as a mature aged student and am in my first year of a four year Social Work course. I am not sure what area I want to work in when I finish the course but want to make the most of the course to look into some areas that are of interest to me.

One of the areas I would like to try to incorporate into my studies is the use of psychedelics such as psilocybin and LSD – in particular the use for dealing with PTSD and the use for dealing with addiction but I am also open to other ideas.

Does anyone have any ideas of how might be a good way of incorporating this with my studies that would be approved of by the university? Does anyone else have any input that might be helpful?

Thanks in advance!

See if they offer any classes that discuss psychedelics, if there are any research projects involving psychedelics you could take part in. Failing that, I'm sure you'll have opportunities within your studies to conduct your own research.

Ask your professors also

If you’re primarily interested in PTSD, I would consider the work MAPS (Rick Doblin??) are doing with MDMA.

dive in!! MAPS is making real progress.  i am new here but lots of experience and have been lucky enough to have ketamine infusion therapy available here and finally no more pills!! these medicines have lasting affects with way less risk.. aside
from the obvious legalities and taboos.  take that away and you've got some big answers🖤

one example of how it's a social problem.. i did psychedelics before my 3 daughters and prettymuch did great at whatever i put my mind to.  after, i was afraid to so when i needed medicine, i went the more accepted path of antidepressants and anti anxiety meds.  i was a good patient for over ten years.  but i was functioning at about 30% and couldn't even tell after awhile.  so i saw that ketamine was available in a clinical setting as treatment for depression, changed my course back to what i know works.  those pills almost ruined me and i've never had any substance abuse problems or anything besides those and it was aweful. my brain was so jumbled, i didn't even notice the changes.  getting off of them was terrifying.  i never had a real 'bad trip' but it felt like coming out of a decade long what a bad trip must feel like. the fact that there is at the very least, a safer option that could really help and is not being opened up to society is a big problem for all of us

At the undergraduate level your programme will largely be determined for you, but you might have research assignments or essays that allow you to choose a topic or approach..
