Lotus Seed?

Anyone have experience with lotus seeds? Apparently they have the highest alkaloid content of the entire plant.
from another ethnobotanical forum (link at bottom):
Quote:
They are sold (as 'lotus plumules') by Chinese herbalists and contain the highest alkaloid content of the entire plant by weight.
They are sometimes sold as an Opium substitute or adulterant as they have a similar psychoactivity and taste when smoked or vaporized.

I have a whole mess of them on hand from two different species. The flowers are best used although grown from seed it takes 2 years to flower.

Have you consumed the seeds? If so, did you notice any activity?
The consensus seems to be growing that the seed plumules surpass the flowers in potency.

I havent consumed the seeds because I cannot be certain if theyre free from toxins/contaminants since they spray pesticides around here.I had been growing them outdoors decoratively but now that I have an indoor garden going I am going to start some seed indoors soon.
I may try the seeds from the ones I will be growing indoors, however that will be awhile.lol

All lotus/water lily have alkaloids with similar effects as the others. Namely Nymphaea Caerulea,Nymphaea Alba,Nelumbo lutea and Nelumbo nucifera are the most popular ones. And plumules if I am correct are the seed pods not the seeds.I do know chinese people eat seed in dishes and sometimes also small leaves and roots are used also but I dont hear of them eating the flower which to my knowledge is the only active part.(flower meaning petals and seed pod)
