I know this isn't directly about mushroom hunting but how many of you guys enjoy getting close to and photographing snakes, lizards, turtles, salamanders, ect while looking for your mushrooms of choice. Now that spring is here alot of reptiles are coming out of brumation and I've been loving the gorgeous snakes I've been finding. Theres got to be someone else here that enjoys it too....right?

Yeah, That's A Nice One. I Haven't Seen Any Venomous Species Yet, & Haven't Been Able To Get A Picture Of The Non Venomous I've Seen This Year.

My kind of thread I love reptiles, especially snakes!
Wait and see what all I post when I go out this year!
I found a bunch of these garters coming out of hibernation last week.

Oh, I love the orange striped ones! If I'm not mistaken those are the San Francisco garter snakes.

That is a very nice example of Diadophis punctatus "orange belly ring neck" Around here they tend to be more light though I've found a few jet black examples!

While they do share similarities i assure you the one in my photos is Pantherophis alleghaniensis "eastern black rat snake". When I find snakes I handle them and attempt to sex them so making positive identification is easy since I can see the belly scales and patterning. Rat snakes have checkered bellies and black racers have a grey/blue belly with no patterns.

I still handle all my snakes too.
And I thought I would never get bitten, but in all my 30 years of handling snakes, I got bit by a copperhead and almost lost my finger, two years back!
I had to get flown to Vanderbilt hospital in Nashville, and they hit me up with three vials of antivenom, at thirty three thousand bucks a dose.
My hospital bill was well over one hundred thousand dollars from this little mishap!
I didn't loose my finger, but it's pretty much useless now.
Goes to show you, that if you mess with nature, it will eventually get the best of you, no matter what!
I have handled some deadly snakes in my time, but I will never do it again!

That's always been a fear of mine too Allium. I try not to free handle the venomous ones but I definayely hook them and get close. I'm glad you're ok though....aside from the insane bill!

I Know, It's Not A Reptile, Nor Amphibian. I Shall Post Pics Of Reptiles As I Can. Wanted To Share This Caterpillar I Saw During My Hunt Today, Thought It Was Pretty Cool.
Edit: Not Knowing Much About Caterpillars, Especially One Like This. I Did Not Dare Touch It.
