Hello. I've played around with agar a bunch and I wanted to try something different than plastic petris that would be easier to sterilize/reuse so I've been trying a no pour tek. I think I'm missing some info because it seems a couple of things are going wrong.
First, I'm using metal lids and I know 1 piece plastic lids are preferable in this case, but when i PC with the agar in the jars with the 2 piece metal lids, it creates a vacuum that makes the jars extremely difficult to open. Then when I do open them to release the pressure it's just sucking in a ton of air around it effectively contaminating it.
Second, Is the amount of water buildup inside the jars that get pressurized is just too much to the point where it pools and covers all the agar in the jar.
I'm thinking maybe drill holes and add Polyfill tightly to the jar lids? So there can be pressure exchange when PCing? I just dont know if this would solve the water pooling problem as well, but I think it probably would if it had a place for that steam to vent. So yeah let me know your opinion on whether to drill holes or not because I see teks that do and some that dont.
I forgot to say. Im using 10g agar to 10g malt extract with a pinch over 400ml of water. I have grown many beautiful clones with this recipe already, using petris though.

I would drill 1 hole and cover it in Micropore tape.

A quarter inch should do the trick.

Personally having done these types of petri jars I recommend putting 4 1/8" holes about a half inch or more apart in the metal lid. The metal side goes down against the glass to make it easier to lift later. Then use a synthetic filter disk they cost about $1 a piece from a sponsor site. Make sure metal burs from making the holes dont puncture the filter disk And then put on the ring. This has worked very well for me. They do get some condensation but if you let them sit for a few days after pressure cooking them before using them, which you should anyhow, the condensation clears up almost completely.

1/4 inch hole covered with micropore tape will fix the vacuum. when you pour the dishes let them cool before putting the lid on and pressure cooking, make them a few days ahead of time or longer. any excess just pour on the floor of your sab
