ID Request - Genus Panaeolus?
    #26579956 - 04/05/20 04:48 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Good morning,

I found these today and was hoping for a positive ID. My best guess is Panaeolus cinctulus, though this is my first go at this.

When I post the pics here, they appear huge. So I am electing to leave them in the link above.

Habitat: Grassy area next to trail next to creek

Gills: To my untrained eye, adnate or adnexed. Black

Stem: Whitish / brownish. Hollow, doesn't feel particularly hardy nor fragile

Cap: Brown and grey, smooth

Spore print color: I did a spore print for 2 hours, but one just got the paper wet and the other barely released any, but from I could tell looked black. I restarted it on a different paper and will leave for 24 hours unless I can get a positive ID here

Bruising: None noted

Location: Northern California south of Sacramento

I found these two separated by a few hundred yards. They were not growing together and not growing with any other specimen.

Now that its been a couple of hours one is definitely smaller and darker brown while the other has a larger cap and is lighter brown in color

Leratiomyces riparius

You will see this a lot, it is California's most common urban spring mushroom.

The books say edibility unknown, but I cooked some up and it's pretty good.
