Keep or Toss These Grain Jars? * 1
    #26579523 - 04/05/20 01:25 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hi all,
About 14 days ago I inoculated my first oat jars with small agar wedges. Unfortunately I made the mistake of overcooking the grains and as such many of them burst.
At the time I did not realize this would be a problem, only coming to find out after inoculation that the grains were all stuck together in one large clump!  :facepalm3:

12 days in and they had only just begun to barely jump off  the agar, so I impatiently shook the jars.

Here's where they're at now 2 days later. Should I wait and see how they progress, or just accept my mistake, toss them out and try again?

Thank you!

If you don't need the space/jar, I'd let it be and see if anything comes out of it.

I'd wait to see if they colonize you've already came this far

Yeah makes sense, need to be more patient. In the mean time I suppose I'll mess around some more with agar.
How much more time should I give it? 7-10 days?

5 days later... jars have definitely made some progress, still not too optimistic. Hoping they turn out alright but I think my poor prep doomed them from the start.
I shook one about 2 days ago to see what would happen and it seems to be recovering okay. Any thoughts on whether I should give the other 3 a shake or just leave them to colonize on their own?

You don't wanna shake jars more than once.
They look ok you just need to let them sit
and colonize.

Yeah, definitely shake them. They're at almost 50%, so you should expect rapid colonization afterwards.

I hate to disagree but give those jars a good shake! The only time an extra shake will go bad is if your spawn is dirty.

The reason why people generally say only shake once is because that's the fastest way to colonize a jar: one good shake at just the right moment. The way your jars are though, with all the colonized stuff at the top, it's going to take at least a month to finish.

P.s. I'm talking only about jars 1 and 3 where only the top half is colonized.

I don't think those even got a shake before. He only shook one jar and is asking if he should shake the other 3.

Shake 1 and 3! I’ve had PE jars take a month to colonize from an lc you’re not doing bad at this point, I am just seeing pins in that tub the jars were started 3/1.

Shake that shit yo!!! Give it all a good hard shake, it'll bounce back in 2 days, guaranteed to be finished in less than a week.

And for the record your oats don't look bad at all. At least not to me. A few popped grains is nbd

Yeah visually they're not bad but physically they're very sticky and have clumped since I first PC'ed them.
Unfortunately it was not until after inoculating them that I learned/heard that clumping is undesirable.
Fingers crossed! Thanks for the help!

Hi y'all,
back with an update. Jars grew slow as fuck(33 days since inoculation with agar,) and by today were a mix 85-96% colonized.
At this point I decided I had had enough of this slow growing mycelium occupying my jars, and I decided to give them a shake to see what happens(going to go back to square one with spores and will try to get a faster growing mycelium, combined with a better job prepping the grain.)

After shaking each, a decent amount of the grains that were colonized took on a bluish color?
Is this blueing bruising of the mycelium, or is it some type of mold that was growing underneath?
Given the slow growth, it would make sense if it was mold growing underneath, but having searched I've found another post with a similar look that was supposedly bruising?(Link to post with photos that are closest match, same look but my jars have less of it: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25642421 )

Maybe some of you more experienced peeps can give your take? Pictures are bad but it was the best I could do.
I also put a couple of the grains on an agar dish to see what happens(leftover dish I had, I was sloppy though and may have contaminated it.)
Thanks!

You'll know in a couple days if it's contaminated. I definitely would have waited until you were birthing your spawn before I took any grains for agar. Hard to tell if it's contaminated from those pics.

What's your plan for the jars?

They look OK. Ive seen worst. Dont shake the jar. Let it colonize by itself.

If they surprise me and recover well, and the ones I put on agar don't grow mold then I'll spawn them to a shoebox. Don't want to grow any nasties out in the open.
