DIY Dehydrator - Zero cost
    #26578682 - 04/05/20 04:01 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Long time reader and lurker, learned much, still more to learn...

Hopefully this isn't in the wrong place, but felt having just seen a question on drying that maybe if we wrote this up, it might be useful for people stuck for resources. (Some places are in lockdown at the moment, so shopping may be restricted)

Anyway, being as there wasn't dehydrators in the charity shop when we visited the city, and a finances not being amazing, DIY beckoned.

Given that we seemed to surmise that we needed airflow and warmth, but not too much heat, we decided that we could repurpose some stuff.

The PC is always on (barring power cuts) and venting warm air.
Exit fan on top here was a good donor:

(There is another exit fan, so slightly reduced airflow wasn't too much of an issue for PC cooling)

So a hunt in the garage for something to utilise that airflow turned up a bit of plastic pipe the right  diameter. It was the inside of a combined foam roller, hence the funky fluting. Cut to length to sit between the top of the PC and the shelf above, while allowing space for air to flow out.
Got a bit of left over mesh screening and wrapped it around the bottom and secured with a zip tie. Figuring this would catch anything dropped though by accident.

The mesh at the bottom was too large and would have had everything sat right on top of the fan, so used a much finer mesh bag, found in the stash of craft things. It once had wool delivered in it. This drops in and sits 2/3 of the way down the pipe. A handy draw string helped secure this. Also means dried mushrooms can just be removed in the bag, the bag opened up and they are then easy to handle when checking and moving to storage.

This sits over the exit fan, and dries over a few days.

Probably 3 days would be fine, but as we were doing a staggered harvest from BRF cakes, we added the mushrooms on three consecutive mornings. Wet weights were recorded before adding. On day 7, dry weight had seen a reduction of 92%, which seemed consistent with what we had read about what was desirable.

These were then stored in a ceramic jar with a packet of silica taped to the underside of the lid.
So far, all seems good

Sure there are better solutions, but the advantages for us were zero outlay and zero extra running costs.
