Drying mushrooms
#26578555 - 04/05/20 01:48 AM (3 years, 9 months ago) |

Good morning everyone,
I'm probably 2 weeks away from harvesting so I want to get something sorted so I can dry my mushrooms.
I've been searching the forum and reddit but it looks like there isn't a definitive answer as to what the best method is.
I was told to check the FAQ but the page is dead.
What I've gathered is that heating shrooms to dry them is bad because I can decrease the potency.
So my question is, how should I dry my mushrooms?
Also, if a dehydrator is the way forward, where can I get one (UK) that will arrive within 2 weeks?
If not, what are my options?
Thanks as always folks!

Don't they have Amazon in the UK? Just get a dehydrator man, it's the easiest and most reliable method.Dehydrators are nice because they have more than one use too. My wife loves when I make jerky, and seasonal dried fruits are always a good snack too. Don't go making some janky ass Damprid/boxfan/whatever stupid stuff people have come up with in the past.
Here's a link for a dehydrator from Amazon UK and Prime shipping. 50 pounds is not bad for what it is.

Thank for the reply.
Yeah we've got Amazon but all the delivery times are 1 month+, which has me a little worried.

Makes sense. Not sure how the quarantine stuff is over there or the culture around it. Here in the US people don't seem to give a damn still even though we're now leading the world in amount of cases lol. You could also try checking local classified listings or thrift stores, assuming anything is open and people are willing to meet.

All charity shops (thrift stores) are closed and most people will not meet via a classified ad or FB market.
I tried the local stores where I thought I could purchase it, but alas they don't sell anything I need.
I may just have to keep scouring the web for a decent delivery time by the look of it.

170F in the oven on a cookie sheet until cracker dry.
A dehydrator would be better but until then, the oven will keep them from degrading from staying moist too long.
Keep them in a sealed jar after that preferably with a desiccant

Thanks for the reply.
I have read repeatedly that this is an absolute no go due to the heat breaking down the active ingredients?

Yeah there's a lot of bad info about that. 1 - A dehydrator runs at about 170 with no potency loss 2 - making tea gets it up over 200 and a lot of people use the method
Use your own mind and do what you feel will work

just go buy a dehydrator now. save yourself the headache cuz thats what ul end up doin anyway. you can get 1 at a second hand store for 20$ or less. fans and damp rid and ovens or any of that other home made type shit. it dont work for nothing. you will just end up wasting time and lowering the potency of your mushrooms only to end up getting a dehydrator anyway. i know thats what i and several others before me have done. anything other than a dehydrator wont get them 100% completely cracker dry. all other methods really only get them as dry as the air in the enviroment they are in

well you dont have to agree with me. im just tellin u that you may think they are dry but in all reality they are only as dry as the environment they are being dried in. that is fact and has been proven over and over again. im only trying to help save you time and save your mushrooms from molding during storage. and also save from a loss of potency due to the degradation of molding and or the oxidization that occurs during a longer drying process

But thanks for your reply. I'll have a look for a dehydrator, I just pray that I can get one from somewhere in time.

wasnt really directing at any one poster. i was just stating in general what i have found to be the case through my own experience of trying other methods. when i first started i also tried all that shit only to end up going to get a dehydrator anyway. so i just wanted to let everyone who may be trying to avoid getting one to save a few bucks know that its not worth the hassle was all. you will totally thank yourself in the long run for having made the investment.

In an emergency, you can build a drying box.

This is just a plastic box with a tight fitting lid, some 6mm wire screen, and CaCl sold as Damp Rid or DriRite here in the U.S. It is usually in the paint section of whatever a hardware store is called in the U.K. I have used this for years. It takes a couple of days, but they will be cracker dry and without much loss of potency. Just don't let the mushrooms touch the desiccant.

Well if he can't find a dehydrator in time he could use this technique. Better than not drying at all and letting the mushies go slimey

You can definitely use the fan dry / desiccant method if you have to. I made a bag out of screen material, and I’ve used laundry bags with all the holes in them. Keep constant fan air for 3 days and then store in a Tupperware with a cup full of desiccant in one corner. I have kept mushrooms for 5 years this way with no problems, as long as you check and change the desiccant every year or so.
But the dehydrator is so much better lol. If you can’t get one in time for your harvest though the fan or possibly the oven (never tried) will work.

It turned gooey on me the first time I tried it because after a day and a half or so I thought the mush were pretty dry but they still had plenty of water hiding in them. That’s why I went to the 3 days of constant air. I don’t remember why I was out a dehydrator at the time. Then I just cut down a styrofoam cup to fit in my Tupperware and filled it up, if it starts to look water logged just replace it with a new cup full.
But I’d definitely keep desiccant with your stored fruits even with a dehydrator, if you’ll be keeping them any decent length of time.

ya and you can also stand over them and fart on them and eventually they will start to dry but it dont make it a good idea. look do whatever ya want im simply just stating that if hes got 2 weeks that should b more than enough time to get a dehydrator and do it the rite way to start with. a dehydrator and a pressure cooker are the most useful and important tools of any cultivators toolbox.

I understand that you are vehemently against this technique, although you don't explain why. This is the method first introduced in the PF Tek, and I know that it is old technology but if you don't happen to have a food dehydrator, this method is cheap, readily available, and it works.

I was under the impression that this forum was supposed to be about helping each other. I try to do that. I don't know you at all, but from the posts that I have read from you to me have all been very negative. That is not very helpful.

THE OVEN TEMP OF 170F WON'T HURT THEM ONE FUCKING BIT!
OP says 2nd hand stores are closed and delivery of a dehydrator would take over a month. Honestly, I wouldn't waste money on a new one at this point and stay off reddit, that place is garbage for shroom info
IF YOU CAN BOIL SHROOMS (AT 212F) TO MAKE TEA YOU SURE AS FUCK CAN HEAT THEM TO 170F IN THE OVEN

The original post said that he was afraid that he couldn't get a dehydrator in time for drying his produce, and I said "In an emergency" you can..... So a food dehydrator is the best way to get them cracker dry, but it's not the only way. As far as your negativity is concerned I would ask you to review the comments that you made in my posts about the All-in-one bag experiment where you promised that it was doomed to failure. You were wrong on that one too.

Oh, Yeah that is a dinner plate. It's not done yet.
I apologize to the original poster for hijacking the thread and I return it to him.

Ok everyone, let's calm down. I think people are starting to get real tense with everyone being shut in and worried and watching the death all over the world.
I see it in my daughters and wife. Several times a day things get real tense and people start spouting off and being shitty. Let's all make an effort to exude extra positivity, helpfulness, and understanding. Maybe, just maybe, we can emerge from this problem a better set of humans than we were

I recently got a fan fed dehumidifier that gets a full 4oz absolutely cracker dry in ~8-10 hours. I set it at 140, but it actually cycles heat on around 120-130 degrees. Totally worth it if you have the time and resources.
Otherwise in the past I laid them out on a box fan on top of mesh screen. Once they were mostly dry there I'd move them to a taped up ol' SGFC filled with the crystal kitty litter and some oven racks. The fan tosses little guys as they dry and getting everything situated without dropping directly onto the dissicant in the chamber bites!
Once I got tired of messing with that I got a harbor freight "66906" dehydrator for a while, don't know where it went since but it worked for small batches. Doesn't seem like they sell them any more, but to run large batches I just set the heat coil on the dissicant in my chamber and ran all the mushies on racks above. Worked a treat for the huge third and later flush shroomies.

Dehydrator is absolutely the best option. Order one now and if doesn't show up in time you can make a big batch of tea and freeze it up in cubes.
