Wow... it's good to see that photo of the Oysters at their almost-past-prime picking state! Now the rest of us know not to wait too long if you want the best tasting mushrooms! Thanks, Doc!

I dunked the bag over night and put it in another humidity tent.

Second flush or failure is on it's way!

I should have made this clear when I mentioned when to pick them:

As with any mushroom, the younger ones are usually the best tasting. Good luck with the 2nd flush, and I am glad you liked them. You cannot buy a better tasting mushroom than the ones you grow fresh at home. I have never, and will never buy mushrooms at the grocery store.

They don't even look like oysters here, and the agaricus is always bruised badly. Totally un-appetizing to me. Welcome to the wonderful world of fresh edibles Doc!

P.S. - Don't forget pictures of the second flush...

Pick the whole cluster. You avoid handling them this way, and they will store better (if they make it to storage  )...

Re: Their back! [Re: doc34]

Well,I attempted to spawn the Oysters to some straw which failed drastically.
First,my pasteurisation times were off-I pasteurized for 2 hours at 170'f.I then let cool and stuffed it into a 'homeade bag' and sealed it up airtight
I forgot they needed air exchange and left them in that sealed bag for 2 weeks when I read that I had screwed up,and so I went poked holes in it,lmao,Which in turn led to a massive "black pin mold" infestation. So ,unfortunatly,I had to toss
them in the trash!!

Then the next day,I was talking to a friend of mine,ATWAR,and I explained what had happened and she told me how to save them using the cardboard trick, which I immediately went and dug them out of the trash and attempted to save them.At this point there was only one spot of mycelium that wasn't over-run with black pin mold and I dug it out(unsterile, lmao)and then I went to saving them.

I made probably 24 cardboard cultures following the proceedures outlined in this thread  Cardboard cloning tek

So a few days go by and I send some to my friend to help me save them on agar, which she does!,and then I waited for them to colonise the cardboard. This is where I really thought all had been lost, because the growth that I had seen was very thin and whispy-like cobweb.

So,I said 'WTF' and took one piece of cardboard and cut off a little piece and put one it into a prepared jar karo water, and I waited.Well, after about 4 days I noticed growth in the karo water VVVV

6/18/04
So I said 'yes' and made 5 jars of WBS and then I did a transfer of cardboard pieces(from the same piece that I took the first piece from I used in the karo water)and put a small piece in each jar.
They really started taking off-at first I thought I was growing a contam, but that soon changed VVVV

6/26 VVVV

6/27 VVV

Jar 5 contamned with the green mold so it was put aside in quaranteen(sp?)The karo jar also contamned and it was tossed out,But the other 4 jars fully colonised and then I spawned 3 of them to a small amount of straw, which this time I pasteurized for 1 hour at 160'f,then I stuffed it into a newer designed bag of mine(yes I put a hole in it this time!!!)VVVI kept one back in the fridge for later use.

which they devoured almost immediately this time!!! VVV

So today I went and spawned 1 bag to some hardwood shavings(Cherry)that I had around the house. VVVV

Now we wait.
I know I am the experimental type and these oysters have been to hell and back, lamo, but I think I have them now and I will post pics as I go along.I am trying the Cherry shavings because I have alot of them on hand.I read that they will fruit on hardwoods and Cherry is a hardwood. It's just an experiment, who knows they may love it.They have made it this far-a little more torture shouldn't hurt them, lol!

Thank You ATWAR for ALL of your help!!!

Oh,and I almost forgot--->jar 5??????
Well,as you can see by the oulines that it is 'kickin the crap' out of the green stuff!!!VVVV

It has almost completely taken over the contam! This jar will used to spawn an outdoor plot later in this thread.
It was kept in complete darkness.

These are the toughest little mushrooms I have ever seen!

Thanks MycoBag,ATWAR and the Shroomery for all of your help and information.I couldn't have gotten this far without you guy's and gal's!

No, Thank you Doc! I now have another oyster to grow. So long as my advice helped you, that is enough for me. And on the plus side, I got a free culture. Your the one that did all the work, not me. I am so very glad you got them before trash day!
Hey, I have an idea on how you can thank me... Get out there and clone me a wild Florida oyster!

Good luck on the 2nd round!

Oh yeah, before I go... If anyone reads this that knows, is the blue oyster to be considered a separate species or a variant of ostreatus? Is it Pleurotus columbinus or Pleurotus ostreatus var columbinus? It says something of this nature in GGMM, but I was curious to know if a consensus has been made...

Lol,I forgot to mention that they hitched a ride across the continent,in a sandwich baggie, wrapped in an envelope,in the middle of June,in the back of some mail truck,to arrive at your house.

->"Hey, I have an idea on how you can thank me... Get out there and clone me a wild Florida oyster!"

I'm working on that!

There back!!!!!!

This is one of the straw bags that I made. The Cherry shavings are still colonizing and I'll post pics of them when they are done.
I also made 3 more big bags yesterday, plus I have 5 more straw bags like this one colonizing.
And to think I almost let the trash have them, lol.
That little brown spot is where I left them out in the sun.I had to leave in a hurry and forgot them, but,I think they will be ok-after what all they have been through,I know they will, lol.
more to come soon!
