There are dozens of ways to do Grain so here is one i like to do where the peparation is quick and simple.
Grain Tek for White Millet in 30 minutes or Less for Perfect Millet Ready to Sterilize
Here im going to take some time and share my process for doing Millet grain preparation using 1 quart mason jars.
For using spawn bags with millet Click Here for my 45 minute spawn bag tek.
First here are the advantages of using millet:
Quote:
#1 The prep is too simple. No soaking. No rinsing. No drying. No boiling or Simmering and No waiting on all of those factors before you can have grain ready to sterilize.
#2 Usually G2G or LC in under 5 days. 6-8 tops.
#3 Conspiracy Time! Millet is such a great grain because you get the maximum amount of inoculation points due to its tiny size. I have also observed millet to colonize more rapidly than other grains I've tried such as oats, rye and perhaps even WBS.
We know of mycelium as operating like a network and because the mycelium has shorter distances to travel to colonize each grain before it reconnects back to "another node on network" this saves itself energy and time. As opposed to having to go over and around huge chunks of oats.
** That could all be bullshit but IME i do observe better colonization rates than using other grains. Its just something i theorize. Maybe its the psilocybin talking.
#4 Virtually No learning curve. Little if not any trial and error. You can get perfect moisture content each and every time! No over boiled grains or Assuming your grains are hydrated correctly!
Since grains can vary if you do get burst grains just dial back the water a notch on the next run to dial it in.
Disadvantage of using millet.
#1 The only price you have to pay for using millet with this process is after the PC cycle has completed and your jars are cool enough to handle you will have to bang and rattle each jar to break up the grain at the bottom.
Once its broken up it ll remain loose and perfect. If you decide not to use gypsum youll just have to slap longer. You still have to bang and rattle with gypsum but its so much easier and only takes a few seconds each jar.
**A pound of gypsum is $10 or less and lasts a long fucking time. Again, I highly recommend using it as it will make the after cook shake quite effortless compared to not using gypsum.
Lets prepare some millet!
Supplies: [of course feel free to use whatever prep tools you have. This is just what i use.
This recipe is dialed in for 7 G2G Quart Jars using a Presto 23qt Canner.
Millet 5gal bucket Small handled wash bucket 5/32 drill bit Fine mesh strainer or paint strainer bag Straining spoon with holes big enough for millet to fall through 7 Quart jars [If using 23qt presto] with you lid tek of choice. Kitchen Scale Mason Jar Funnel Large bowl A plastic cup to scoop grains and pour water from GYPSUM

STEP 1. Bucket sifter and grain cleanup
Time to Complete: 5 mins or less
once you have your sifter bucket then 0 mins or if you have pure millet ready to go.
**[Skip this step if you have pure millet without any sunflower seeds etc]
Drill tiny holes with your 5/32 bit into the bottom of the small wash bucket. We are using this bucket as a quick sifter to separate the millet from mostly everything else. You dont have to get every sunflower seed, stick or whatever. Were just removing the majority.
Place your newly made sifter bucket into your 5 gallon buck. Open your millet and fill the small bucket about 1/4 - 1/3 full. Try not to fill it more than that or youll have to use too much effort to shake it and itll be heavier.
Now oscillate or shake and the millet will begin to fall through and collect in the 5 gal bucket. Fill your 5 gal buck up as much as you want but youll need almost a 1/4 full. This process shouldn't take more than a few mins.

https://imgur.com/a/lCMGWSf <easy.gif>
STEP 2. The Dry Rinse
Time to Complete: 3-4 Minutes
Lay out your kitchen scale. Place a large bowl on top and press the TARE button. Now pour in 1575 grams of your pre-sifted millet into the bowl. This is enough for 7 G2G receiving jars.
**Use 1750 grams for slightly fuller Myco Qt Jars [LC or Agar.] Dont worry the millet breaks up so easily! The next steps will have precise millet:h20 ratios for each jar type.

Now dump the weighed millet into your fine mesh strainer or paint strainer bag. Do Not Rinse it or get it wet!
Now take your slotted spoon and give the dry millet a brisk stir. You can let the seed sift through the spoon and collect any sticks and sunflower seeds if they got through the bucket. Now give the strainer a little shake or just more stirring and notice the dust and debris that has fallen out from the bottom.

This is what i call a "Dry Rinse".

STEP 3. Load the Jars
Time to complete : 10-12 mins or less
A. In each of the 7 Jars drop in a pinch of gypsum. The tip of a knife works too or just use a spoon and dab a little and drop it in. For reference it might be equivalent to about 5-10 grains or so of millet.
B. Place your jar with the funnel inserted onto the scale and press TARE. Using a plastic cup scoop your millet from the strainer and load into the jar until the scale reads 225 grams. [It can be 220-230 its fine] This will give you the perfect amount for a G2G jar.
Set the jar to the side and do the next one.

You dont have to press TARE each time. If the next jar reads 2 grams just fill will millet until you have 227 for example.
Repeat until all 7 jars have seed.
Fill a jug/pitcher with warm-hot water from the tap or if your operating beside the sink just run the water and youll use your scoop cup from earlier on the next step.
Place a seeded jar with the funnel on the scale and press TARE. Slowly pour your hot water into the jar until it reads 125 grams. Repeat the process until all the jars have water.
**IF you chose 1750g for slightly more full myco quart jars then fill each jar to 250 grams of millet. With 130g of water for LC receiving jar or 135g for an agar receiving jar.

Now were going to lightly swirl each jar to distribute the dissolved gypsum.
Swirl each jar for about 3-4seconds each.
https://imgur.com/ocncGbu <easier.gif>
Thats it! Your grain jars are now fully prepared and ready for sterilization!
Now proceed to apply your lids and load your pressure cooker.
I use plastic lids and polyfill with SHIPs. Sometimes SFD. I put the lid on and turn until I meet resistance. I do not tighten as the heat will make the lid too tight.

STEP 4. Sterilization
PC For 90 minutes @ 15-17psi
** Now if you know how to use a PC just scroll down to the FINAL STEP
Everyone does their sterilization differently and people have varying steralizers or canners. This is how i do it using a Presto 23qt Canner glasstop/flattop stove model.
I use jar rings stacked 2 high around the bottom of the canner then place the trivet on top of the rings. I add roughly 2 1/3 quarts of hot water.
I have hard water so i add a splash of white distilled vinegar to the PC so the jars come out shiny and clean.
On the large burner i set the stove to 9 and let it heat up.
I cover each polyfill jar with my saved leftover aluminum foil squares from my last jar run and load them all into the canner. I dont let my [millet] jars sit in water.

23 Quart Presto usually asks for 3qt of water. I use 2 1/3 because i dont want the bottom of the jar submerged in water for various reasons.
Put the canner lid on and lock it into place. After a couple mins the lock mechanism lifts into place and steam starts to escape the vent. Once that happens i drop the dial to about 4-5 and then i set a timer for 10 mins
Continue to let the steam vent so the air from inside the jars gets purged. You will probably hear the PC hiss and spit around the 6-8 min mark or sooner. That is air being purged and its normal. When the timer goes off I place the rocker weight on the vent and the pressure will begin to rise.
Once i get to about 10-11psi i drop the temp dial to 4. Once the pressure reaches 15psi i drop the temp to just below 2. i set a timer for 90 mins and walk away. My stove will hold 16 to 16.5 psi the entire time.
Your heat up and hold setting for your stove dial may and probably will vary.
Once the timer goes off i then turn off the stove and just leave it alone. Let the pressure decrease on its own. Usually if i havnt already prepared the next batch of jars ill begin to do it at this point because by the time i have more jars ready the pressure will read 0 and i can proceed to the final step.
The Final Step
Once the pressure reads 0 itll still be ridiculously hot so you can wait until it cools entirely to do this final step.
Once it hits 0psi grab 2 oven mitts. I open the pressure cooker and grab the top of a jar with an oven mitt. I tighten the lid just a little bit then i bang it against my hand with a mitt over it [do not do this if you cant, use a book or tire whatever, my hands are tough] give it about 4-5 whacks.
https://imgur.com/aK2cV4I <bang.gif>
then rattle it to mix it around.
https://imgur.com/pqcUApN <rattle.gif>
If you didnt use gypsum itll take more effort but just be careful and dont go nuts.
Now your grain jars need to cool down to room temp and then they're ready for inoculation!
Here is the final result!

Still HOT AF! No bursted grains, yay!
**If youre seeing burst grains just lower your water content depending on how many you can see. For example use 5-10g less water or 30 grams more seed. Perhaps your millet cant hold as much water as mine and vice versa.
Grain jars with perfect moisture content and it only took me 15 mins to prep for the PC [because im used to it] but it shouldnt take you more than 30 mins your first try. Especially if youve never done any grain prep at all.
I hope you find this useful. I'll probably clean this tek up over time to include better pictures and far more conscise wording.
If you have any suggestions or questions feel free to chime in but for now this is all the time i have for this version since im using a phone to do this and it took longer than i anticipated but ill be editing it over time.
Spawn bag version coming up next!

This is a cool tek, I like how it is more energy efficient then a lot of grain prep methods. No wasted soak or rinse water, no wasted energy heating the grains, laying them out, drying, cooling, only to be reheated again in the PC.
I have never tried with millet but i like the idea so much ive done it with wheat lots of times. wheat may be different but i found the clumping on the bottom excessive and would have to beat them against a tire to break the clumps unless i reduced my moisture content to 40% or less. this low moisture lead to slower colonization, at least for wheat.
So for wheat i modified this method to weighing my entire 7 jars worth of grain into a pot, adding my water to preferred moisture content (I like ~50% water in wheat) and cooking it like rice until the water is absorbed. spoon the grains into jars hot and PC.
I also found a little jam jar that would hold exactly 250 grams of dry grain when it is topped off making it an ideal measuring scoop for filling jars or measuring 7 jars worth of grain into my pot.
anyways thanks for sharing, it is a good technique!

This is rad! Thanks! I was taught with millet on my first grow only 4 months ago, so this will be nice to try. Didn't question using millet, but after your explanation and efficiency it seems like a no-brainer now. Would have taken me some time to cut out all prep, and dial it, especially being so new to this.

Great tek! I've been looking for a good alternative to the nasty oats in my region. I'm definitely going to give this a shot when I'm in the market for new spawn. Way less work than the prep hoops I have to jump through right now

I tried doing something similar with oats before. Couldn't get it quite right. I have done RR's rye grass seed before for stones. Works like a charm.

Yea i prefer doing spawn bags for monos instead of running jars all week. Its harder to use oats for them though. I need to experiment with the 35lbs of oats i have.
Trying to get 3-4lb millet bags is much easier than oats because you can measure the exact water content you need. [About 46% for bags as opposed to roughly 56% for jars]
With oats i havnt been able to dial in the correct moisture for bags. Jars are pretty consistent but those spawn bags need about 5-10% less moisture than jars.

It would be cool to do the same method for bags. Like make a bag holder that fits on the scale and then tear it with an empty bag and proceed.

Yea i used to soak wbs, simmer wbs and ive done oats. Wastes time imo. When i have an opportunity to run the PC I like that i can jump right in and have grain ready to go into Pc within a very short period of time instead of waiting hours boiling/simmering draining,drying..shit spread out everywhere.. just doesnt fit for how stealthy and punctual i need to be in my current situation.
I can have the kitchen rippin' and within 5-6 hours its like it never even happened and i have 14-40 jars worth of spawn to show for it without waiting on shit to soak, boil or dry.
Kitchen cleaned and everything put away in no time before the kids hit the door.

To be honest all shout outs go to Crack for this:
1 cup of millet to about half cup of water and PC
Perfect for G2G

Ill stick to 24hr soak for millet. It's passive and I find problems with contaminants when underhydrated and of course clumping problems when overhydrated.

Millet masters>oat bags

Might sound stupid but if using milo instead of millet, would you need to change the water ratio? Thanks!

Milo doesn't absorb dick by volume IIRC. I do have 100LB in the pantry... I hope it's not buggy... Milo was also conveniently hydrated with a 24hr soak IME.

I def overlooked this 'FINAL STEP' and ended up with grain bursts, but could still use the jars. My next run, I will def be taking jars out once pc hits 0 to prevent bursting.
