Gymnopilus Luteus?
    #26576667 - 04/04/20 04:04 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Was thinking I'd found Gymnopilus junonius but am now leaning toward Luteus.
Rusty orange brown spore print.
Growing out of Japanese Cedar Stumps.
Taranaki, New Zealand.
Bitter taste, some  slight aniseed smell.
No bluing yet.

I don't think G. luteus has been found in New Zealand, so I'd probably go with G. junonius or perhaps G. ventricosus if what you have is indeed a species of Gymnopilus.
That being said, your print appears to be quite weak, you should probably let it sit longer to get a proper fat print so we can see the true color of it.

Something doesn't look right about the non-habitat photos, but its probably just a lighting thing.

Anyways, you've found a Gymnopilus of the spectabilis-imperialis clade

Yeah the lighting of the ones inside wasn't that great, I'll get another few pics and do another spore test now. It was the aniseed smell that got me 2nd guessing, it wasn't on all of them, just now and then you'd get a whiff. There's still plenty of pins down there so I'dsay it won't be  long and there'll be more. Something to keep me busy. So hold of on trying them for now would be best advice for now? And thanks all.

Got that spore print done again.

Is there a way to separate a  G. luteus from a G. junonius or G. ventricosus?
Or is that done at a microscopic level? I spent hours trying to figure it all out but kinda went in circles.
Thanks.
