Metabolites or something else?
    #26575153 - 04/03/20 11:59 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

This is a coir/verm sub I grated 6 BRF cakes to after they didn't fruit as cakes.  There is some obvious yellowing to parts of the substrate and from what I've been able to find, this is from metabolites released by the mycelium either due to bacterial contamination or from too warm of fruiting temperature. I wanted to post a pic just to confirm that's what it is and not something else.  You can see it mostly at the 6 o'clock position of the tote.  It also was very evident where the big cluster of fruits are at the 9 o'clock position which leads me to my second question, are these fruits safe to eat if they grew directly from a yellowed section of substrate?  Also, some of the caps are looking pretty odd.  Is this a mutation as a result of the yellow substrate or something else?

Those cap blobs are normal and can happen even with perfect tubs.

The yellowing probably is from metabolites, it's hard to know the

source exactly. But it doesn't matter now cause it's fruiting and

will give you a harvest. Don't eat any actual rotten fruits if you

get any.

Cool.  I'll toss anything that looks rotten (nothing so far; keeping fingers crossed) and put everything else in the dehydrator.

Just curious how long your cakes sat before you decided to spawn them to bulk? And what kind of fruiting chamber did you have them in? :takingnotes:

They were in a humidity chamber for close to 2 weeks (don't remember the exact number of days).

Harvested a good amount today.  Some of the big ones still have a little bit of maturing to do.  Still plenty of small mushies and pins so here's hoping for a decent 2nd flush.
