Please help me figure out what I'm doing wrong. I need to micro dose but I keep messing up

When I PC my jars, the oats inside keep coming out sticking together and it looks wet.
I'm doing bods tek. I followed his oats and PCing tek to the letter.
The mistake I think I made, is that when I loaded the oats, they felt sticky, but passed the toilet paper test.
What is causing them to be sticky? I had extra oats left out, and they felt almost not sticky at all and dry. Is that what it's suppose to feel like? I let mine cool off as long as Bod stated in his tek bud maybe I need more time?
My lids could be a concern, but now after feeling the oats that were left to dry, the lids may not be a concern.
I Used poxy and some of the filters have a VERY small gaps around. I'm not even sure if thee gaps go all the way back. I don't think the gaps are small enough for the amount of water to get in, that would be required to make all the grains look the same.

Any ideas?

Maybe you boiled too long and they got starched.
Smash open an oat, is it white inside and firm or greyish smushy

If your filters have any gaps whatsoever they’re not gonna work.
You could try switching to bird seed and see if it’s the grain or the lids.
Just soak it between 12 and 24 hours then scoop out a strainer full and let it drain for 20 mins then load it in the jars.

Are you using whole oats? With the shell thing still on - edit, just noticed the pic link. 👍
I soak oats for 24 hours or so, lay them out on a towel for a bit and then PC. But a simmer can work too if time is a concern.

Are any of your oats sticky like mine? They almost feel slimy.

It looks like mashed potatoes.
How should it look?

That's the issue though. It could be the lids. I can't tell how far the gap goes. It looks like it's just on the outside but could go further in. I used a shit ton of epoxy on each lid though.
I guess I should cover all of the holes with epoxy and that way I'd eliminate the problem?

So from bods tek he doesn't soak them, so I wasn't either. I'm not sure why the oats would work for him and countless other people, but not be.
Are your oats sticky or slimy? Or completely 100% dry? I guess they feel dry, but slimy it's kinda weird to describe.

He wants to see if you're using whole oats and not hulled oats. Whole oats are just that, oats with the shell/hull intact. I follow one of the trusted teks and boil 12 cups (makes 9 jars) for about 45 mins using my uncovered pc. Start with cool water at least 3x the level of the oats, start heat at medium and bring up slow or you might warp the bottom of the pc, crank the heat to high, once the water begins boiling start a timer for 30 mins. Roil that boil, let it rock, stir occasionally. At 30 mins start watching for oats that have lost their hulls. For me, it's 45 mins when I begin seeing a very few de-hulled oats. At that point I dump into big collanders, drain, then pour out on a 3'x4' surface covered by thin cotton tea towels. Crank the ceiling fan on high and occasionally stir them up w a spatula. I wait till they are totally cool and dry to touch, about 2 hours. Almost all oats still have hulls, like 98%. Then I load jars.

What kind of filters are on your lids? They look kind of like SHIPs to me... never seen a filter like that, but I'm a little new.
I do oats following Bod's tek as a guideline, but mine are pretty dirty and yours might be too. So I do a little bit extra:
- Measure out dry oats.
- Place in a large strainer or better still, a big window screen over the sink.
- Rinse the hell out of them with cold water to wash dust and debris off. Then rinse them some more. This helps prevent clumping, sticking, etc.
- Boil the water first, then when it's at a hard boil dump in the grains and stir.
- Give them a good stir every few minutes while they're boiling.
- Boil for 30 minutes and then pull one out and cut it in half with scissors. It should be gray. To compare, cut open a dry one and compare the color.
- Check for some burst grains as well. This is a good indicator that you're at or very close to finishing the boil.
- Pull the pot off the stove and strain your oats.
- Stir until the steam stops.
- Spread on screen and let them sit overnight. If all you have is a strainer, give them a stir once in a while to redistribute moisture.
- Before loading they should pass the toilet paper test. You should also be able to run your hand through them without them sticking to you. Your hand shouldn't feel wet at all after handling them.
- Load into jars and PC.

So the mistake I am making, is that the oats are not dry enough? When yours are dry, they have no slimy feeling at all correct? Like I said, they passed the paper towel test, but were slimy.Quote:

They are syringe filters .22 um and SHIP.
That's the mistake I'm making then. I'm going to lay them out on a towel or a plastic bin lid and put a fan on them. Thanks for your suggestions. I wish I had a second colander, but I think with a fan they will dry faster anyway.

Morbility above is more careful than me. I start with unrinced oats already in the cool water. I tried timing based on looking at a cut oat but could never decide what I was seeing.

Oh, my wide mouth qt jars have plastic lids with 1/2 holes plugged with a tight ball of poly. Drilled metal lids rust, don't use them. Those oats look like they are already dehulled. Get a 50lb bag of whole oats from Tractor Supply or any feed supply store for like $20 and microdose till rapture. They are sold as horse feed.

Those look like the correct oats to me.
You are correct, there is no sliminess or moisture on the outsides of the oats when they're ready. They might be slightly cooler than room temp, but that's the only difference. Give them a rinse before you do another batch and let them dry longer and you should be good for initial prep.
I'm not sure if those lids are going to work well for you. I went with a single 0.25 inch hole stuffed with poly-fil originally, then swapped to SFDs. Somebody else might be able to advise a little better on that aspect of your project.
@InfraredRick: I only got to the point of the extensive prep after growing many jars of "melted ice cream." The oats in my area are dirtier than a $5.00 hooker, though. Not many people seem to have as many grain problems as I've had. lol

One more thought...not sure what your hole plugs are but it's possible that they do not allow the jars to release pressure while in your pc. The pc process is to sterilize your prepped grain, not to infuse or release moisture. Cover each lidded jar tight with a 6x6" piece of foil to allow gas exchange and prevent water pooled on the lid from entering the jar.

This is a jar ready for G2G. Look close and you can see some of the oats are splitting but most are still whole. When I shake it it sounds like dry rice, nothing sticky, no slime.

I got a bag from a feed store. They were sold as horse oats.
I read the rust doesnt affect anything. If I have the same issues after I dry the oats better, I'll switch to different lids. I'm trying to save money now though.
How do you push the poly fill into the holes so it's dense? That's a part I can't figure out.

Thanks man. I'll give that a try.
How did you stuff the polyfill into the holes densely? I was planning on using a tooth pick or small screw driver.
If money wasn't an issue, I'd buy the plastic lids and use the SFD, but I can't find any for a decently reasonable price. Most are selling them in packs of 10 for 20 bucks. And I'm kinda broke atm. Any leads where I can get some for a good price, and not in a huge quantity.
If my next boil doesnt go right I'll probably suck it up and switch lids.
Before that I am going to try and fill all the holes with more epoxy though.

I have a pic tek I made a while back on stuffing the holes. It's totally overkill, so I'll have to link up to an imgur album. I'll get it done in a bit to give you a better idea of how to do poly. Word of warning though: when I did this, I was getting lots of contams, so your mileage will vary. It was very likely due to shitty prep work and not the poly though, since lots of people here have used all sorts of poly methods with good results.

This thread made me thoroughly inspect all my lids with RTV adhered SFD's.
They look great to the naked eye, the discs seemed solid and sealed but once i took a closer look i noticed these deceptive fucks were not creating a solid adhesion. Could peel em right up.
I was so shocked that these went unnoticed that i went on a polyfill lid making frenzy.
Fucking RTV.

I had the same problem, the SFD's I glued on with silicone could be peeled right off. Just take a piece of sandpaper and roughen up the part where you apply the silicone, and they'll stick for good.

Thanks man. Earlier you mentioned you had contam issues.
What prep work did you mess up on, and what do you think contributed to your contam issues?
Did you use a SAB?
Any idea where I can buy like 2 Synthetic filters without being ripped off? I only see ones on amazon that are 12 for 20. and I don't need 11 or 10 extra laying around. I just dont want to pay $10 for 2 filters.

Bod and others seemed to have great luck with his simple oat prep. Following that to a "T" I had loads of trouble starting out. Partly from loading too wet, partly because (in my opinion) my grains had a high endospore load and they aren't very good quality. My PC cycle now runs 4 hours at ~19 PSI. It's a time suck, but for me it works with what I've got. My first batch of spores were also total bunk, causing me to question and doubt every aspect of my sterile tek. Honestly, I could probably back way off my methods at this point now that I have viable materials and more experience, but my prep work is almost to the point of ritual now.
Quote:

Yes. I lurked these forums for close to a year before gathering materials and starting. I went right to agar and used a SAB to minimize my failure rate once I was ready.
Quote:

Sorry. When I switched to SFDs I just ran through the trusted vendor list here and compared all the prices, then bought a shitload so that I have a lifetime supply. A cheaper alternative that you might have luck with is E-Z felt. It's kind of like a bootleg version of an SFD using pre-ironed Poly-Fil. You can order it or hit up the crafts store for sheets of it. If you look for "E-Z Felt Tek" with the search engine here there's a really good write-up and thread detailing its use.

SFD cost about a ducet a piece. 1.25 from out grow, but you have to consider shipping so maybe grab some other stuff too

Plastic lids are avail most anywhere canning supplies are sold, Amazon has a 24 count of regular size for $11.98 (Pinnacle Mercantile). I switched to plastic because the edges of drilled metal holes rust and compromised the injection ports syliconed to the lid, plus, the rusted holes with poly were hard to clean out after a run. To make the poly plugs I just take a big pinch of poly from my bag, about the size of a golf ball, and roll it between my palms using a lot of pressure. I keep it tight as I begin to stuff it thru the bottom of the lid. Once a small amount is protruding I pinch it and twist/pull till it's far enough that it can't pull itself back thru. If a bunch is still hanging on the bottom side I snip most of it off with scissors. Once my jars have been dumped its simple to pull and toss the poly plugs and wash the lids for next time. I leave the injection ports in place because they are not a problem if I later use the jars for G2G. Felt looks very appealing, and neater, but it seems to me they are impossible to fully clean between runs while fresh poly plugs cost about a penny each.

Drilling cheap plastic lids is tricky, the bit wants to grab and then crack the edge of the hole. I learned to use fingers on my left hand to push HARD around the hole location, lid sitting on a piece of scrap 2x10", and use a sharp bit at high speed but with very little pressure on the drill. Let the bit shave off and eventually thru the plastic. Drill thru the bottom of the lid. Expect to mess up on a couple lids till you get it down.

I firmly believe that these substances can heal broken minds and change lives for the better. The information in these forums is invaluable. I've gotten great advice here both passively and actively, so why not do what I can to pay it forward?
Besides that, it's a fun hobby and so is tripping

For putting holes in plastic lids I bet hitting the spot with a torch for a second first and then quickly doing the drill would make it pretty easy.

They only have Cellulose, which I read is not as good as SFD.

I did a quick look and it seems like at least a few trusted cultivators here have used the cellulose ones and didn't have any complaints, but there are a few limitations and differences. Overall it seems like kind of a mixed bag. At the cost on out-grow, I'd say it's worth a shot just for the hell of it to try them out.
Relevant thread here.

Yea that was the one that convinced me not to get them.
I'll wait a little longer to see if anyone wants to take pity on me. If not I'll try your poly tek. I got some of that cord handy so I have all the supplies on hand.
