Yes, please be sensible,  by keeping to ourselves and keeping safe distances we are flattening the curve.

plus, Psilocybe subaeruginosa is pretty weedy so go out for exercise (which you are allowed to do) and look in your local area.  you may be surprised.

I am worried about the restrictions myself. My spot is within walking distance from home, so I should be ok. I will just claim I'm exercising, if anyone bothers to stop me. The place I live is pretty rural too.

Another thing i'm considering is just going up there at night. I've been doing my exercise at night when no one else is around anyway....

Do you guys reckon after these few days of rain we'll get any subs?

I went out looking after the heavy rains and found no actives. However, there was quite a lot of mycelium growth which I found on eucalyptus and pine droppings - which could be the beginning of subs.

I was out for a walk this morning and came across these - this is the earliest in the year I've ever seen P. subaeruginosa's out, and I never expected to be the first to find them in a season.

Awesome! nice finds..

Had a look around the garden today found a few nice looking gyms;

It may not be the nicest photo but I'm happy to say that I've also spotted my first sub for the season;

It begins. :awesomenod:

Hi all :smile:

I'm super new here and while I poured over last years thread I never made an account or bothered to submit anything because I just had no luck.

If anyone could give recommendations of locations, SE suburbs preferably (IK that people don't give out exact locations for obvious reasons) it would be much appreciated. I went out around the Dandenong ranges for a general walk and not too hard of a look last year but want to ramp it up and make my first find this year.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated

Hi Yeni.
Dunno about everyone else here but I find parks and reserves in the suburbs easier than national parks. In my experience subs seem to prefer wood chips that local councils have spread. Low lying, shady areas that collect water are your best bet. But after a couple of rainy/overcast days you can find them anywhere.

I new this year would kick off early. We've been getting heaps of heavy rainfall out west/north. Gonna go check my locals today and hopefully have some photos for everyone.

Hey did you find these on woodchips, if so were there plants around, or was it woodchips mixed with grass or something else?

Im curious as im writing a guide and i find woodchip patches tend to fruit a bit later than grassy habitats with decaying wood for example. I think Melbourne is a bit different than Adelaide though and conditions are much better there.

They were on aged woodchips in a council bed ~40km North of Melbourne. The specimens were found approximately 30cm South of a planted native grass, something similar to Lomandra longifolia.

This isn't the location (I've grabbed this from a Google image), but it looked something like this:

Thanks for the reply. I know Melbourne councils are fond of Lomandra, due to my investigations. Shrubbery definitely helps. I know Melbourne got flooded recently, or hit with heavy rain. It could have been twice. Adelaide hasnt had a good soaking since February prior to this weekend. Im thinking subs wont fruint until two decent soakings happen, once to revitalize the mycelium and again to feed and trigger fruits.

One more thing, the woodchips in that photo is actually pine bark... did the woodchips look more like this?

which seems to be the most favourable kind.

Yes, the actual chips were the typical aged eucalypt mulch. I don't see much pine bark around and have never personally seen psilocybes growing from them.

I have heard people say look for eucalyptus woodchips. From my investigations, pure eucalypt woodchips are hard to come by. In Adelaide, i cant find them to buy anywhere except red gum chips. I know there is at least one supplier in Melbourne which sells Eucamulch, The closest thing i have found, probably much more common, is a product called "Leaf mulch" sold by landscape suppliers. Leaf mulch is essentially anything, including eucalyptus, except it depends on the batch. Generally i think it is eucalyptus, acacia and melaleuca but can include ornamental trees or anything thats around. I used to live on a train line, and before i moved out council came, lopped down the trees and put them in the woodchipper. I guess they deemed them unsightly cause they were unmaintained and probably naturally propagated. Afterwards they planted trees in a more manicured fashion. The mulch was mainly the three trees i mentioned. That is what i surmise leaf mulch is. It can include palms or anything though. Pine chips on the otherhand can be bought quite easily, even in the supermarket. Aged woodchips are pretty hard to tell the difference between. The best way is to find the twigs in there to tell what it is. By the way, my point is that what you saw was probably "leaf mulch". Dont know though pure eucamulch might be quite common from deforestation in Gippsland.

Would be interested in anyone who has observations or worked in the council shedding some light on this.

Newbie here does anyone think I would have any luck finding some shrooms in the national park on the Victorian side and if so which sort of area would this be.

My long experience of observing this is that it makes little or no difference and have observed concurrent fruitings from chip beds and in the wild.
