Odd fungus... any ideas?
    #26574014 - 04/02/20 08:59 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Habitat: Found growing beneath Bay Laurel, Santa Cruz Mnts.

Gills: None.

Stem:  I guess there's a stem here, way at the base?

Cap: 7cm max, blackish and funnel-shaped.

Other information: Cold and greasy to the touch.

Spore print: not sure how I would even do this with this kind of fungus... ?

Yo, Grosbeak!

Nice shot!

You know I'm no expert, but it looks like black chanterelle to me

Whoa!  I had no idea these may be good edibles.  There were about three clumps of these.  Should I go back and grab them??  They are not far from me.  crabs... this was under both coastal redwood and bay laurel.  Maybe oaks were nearby?

Yea go back and get them if you can! Those are some of my favorites. I like making a cream sauce with them over pasta, but everything is good like that.

Craterellus calicornucopioides, probably with tan oak but occasionally you see them with coast live oak.

The fertile surface of these is the underside (outside). You can make a spore print by laying them on their side, pretty much the way you'd do it for any gilled mushroom.

Happy mushrooming!

Ah, I figured obtaining a print was that simple.

Saute'd these up in a little butter, dash of salt, and dash of my brother's homemade wine.  What a fabulous mushroom!
