Possible therapeutic role from Shiitake extract (AHCC) in patients infected with Covid-19
    #26571461 - 04/01/20 03:22 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

I came across this article:
Possible therapeutic role of a highly standardized mixture of active compounds derived from cultured Lentinula edodes mycelia (AHCC) in patients infected with 2019 novel coronavirus.

And have been intrigued by it, AHCC seems like a very useful compound many also take to fight cancer.  It might be a great idea for everyone to take it during the current pandemic.

Anyway, I searched for quite some time to find more information about how one can extract AHCC from Shiitake mycelium, and I'm finding it difficult to location this information.  Searched the forum and only saw one very old thread with no details, but does include one reference (emphasis mine):
Quote:

AHCC supplement (Active Hexose Correlated Compound) is a proprietary compound produced by cultivation and enzymatic modification of several species of mushroom mycelia, including shiitake, grown in rice bran extract. Considered a superfood supplement in Japan, AHCC has been researched extensively for its immune enhancement properties. According to human and animal research this mushroom extract may increase natural killer cell activity. AHCC may also increase macrophage activity, enhance cytokine production, and support the healthy functioning of the liver as well as act as an antioxidant.

Trying to crowd source this, maybe someone knows how to extract AHCC from shiitake mycelium?  Looks like just eating the mycelium isn't going do it, requires an enzyme modification...

Found a decent amount of additional information here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6942843/

I'm beginning to think just eating the dehydrated, powdered, put into capsules shiitake mycelium is probably "good enough" but the above paper talks about water extract being much better than ethanol extract with regard to immune system stimulation.  It also reviews study results of using this compound for the survival in rodents vs. influenza.

interesting research.

it does sound like they are freeze drying the mycelia collected from liquid culture and thats the process.

have you seen anywhere that the mushroom body does not have similar effects to the mycelia? why are they only using the mycelia? is for ease of harvest and research or are there separate compounds in the different parts of the organism?

im still trying to wrap my head around what an Active Hexose Correlated Compound is

Interesting stuff.

Have you checked out the Shiitake papers referenced on MushroomrReferences.com?

I have recently started taking ahcc...kinda expensive so I have been taking about half the normal daily dose to help boost my immune system.  I have come down with multiple colds and flu's this season and with the threat of covid I decided to give my system a extra boost.  Very interested in being able to produce my own, even if not as concentrated as purchased products.

I found the patent for achh and read through it. The biggest difference i see in their method is using enzimes to break down the cell walls of the mycelium in liquid culture.  During the enzymatic process some b-glucans are converted to a-glucans.

I had an idea last night as I was mixing up some mushroom extract chi tea.  Any thoughts on enzymaticly process some already available mushrooms extracts high in b-glucans into a-glucans. I found most of the enzimes available online for brewing pretty cheaply minus the chitinase, its expensive. But if working from an extract it may not be as necessary as the actives are already extracted.

Quote:

After the culture, an enzyme such as cellulase, amylase, protease, pectinase or chitinase is added to the resultant culture. An enzymatic reaction is then performed under an optimum temperature condition for 2 to 20 hours to decompose the mycelia of the basidiomycetes. After that, a heat treatment is performed to inactivate the enzymatic reaction, and a mycelium residue is removed from the treated product by centrifugation or the like to collect a supernatant fraction. Thus, an AHCC-containing fraction of interest can be collected.
