mycelium cake wet
    #26572491 - 04/02/20 02:34 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Hello
I bought a mycelium grow kit.
I had it in a shot gun fruiting chamber with water at the bottom of the chamber and perlite and the cake was  On top of a layer of tin foil over the perlite/water . Unfortunately when I was changing the layer of tinfoil the cake fell over and the bottom of it got all wet in the water/perlite mix. I was just wondering how messed up the cake might be and if there is anything I can do to help? Could it increase risk of contamination ? SHould I dry the bottom with tissue paper or something else?
thanks

Leave it be. A little water won't hurt.

thanks for your reply.
Could the perlite harm it?

Here is a few pics. The bottom 4 cm of the cake got quite wet and covered in perlite. You can see bits of perlite on the lid. Should I wipe the bottom of the mycelium with an alcohol wipe or tissue  or should I just leave it all together? Sorry for all the questions but this is my first grow and I would like for it to go well and get the best yield possible. thanks

Your cake looks nice and healthy! I'm even seeing primadora (baby mushroom pins) forming! :amanita2:

It's fine wet. Just don't let your cake sit in stagnant water and you will be fine.

good to know. its been in there a week
I have been misting once a day and for the first 4 days I fanned once everyday aswell but for the last 3 days I have not fanned and only misted cause I figured fanning when no pins are even present is not that important. Should I go back to fanning once a day? To fan I usually get a newspaper and just fan the air around the cake. I also dont like fanning too much as it seems to reduce the humidity.

This doesn't look like shotgun FC, more like humidity chamber? SGFC has holes on all sides.

Fanning or providing fresh air exchange (FAE) helps promote pinning.

Take a look at maintaining proper surface moisture and when to increase FAE.

I don't think you need to mist or fan the HC. Honestly, you don't need to fan the SGFC either. You don't need to fan anything actually.

A lot of different advice!

Thanks I will take it into consideration.
I do worry than fanning might increase the chance of contamination but its probably not that big of a risk.

Colonised healthy substrate doesn't contaminate.

I would trim the foil down to just slightly bigger than the cake. It may not matter much but it gives you more evaporation surface area.

If there are no holes at all I would pop the lid or something at least. In my experience cubes like some fresh air as long as it’s still relatively humid.

Don't over think it.. a few air exchanges a day, light and a higher humidity and time. They will come.

I have a question, why is there standing water inside your tub?

I see what your saying about making the foil area smaller for better evaporation and humidity  and  I would like to but.... so far all the white fluff/mycelium growth has been on the side of the block and no growth on the top of the block. This suggests to me the mushroom growth will all occur on the sides. I do not want the mushrooms growing into the perlite. Thats why I have an extra big layer of foil, to make sure the mushrooms dont touch off the perlite.

Ye I am thinking about holes aswell but I could just fan more often. If i put holes in it the humidity will go down.

is this directed at me?

If so the perlite in my tub is saturated with water.
