Good evening, This is my first attempt growing any sort of mushroom at home and I have run into an unexpected issue. I have been following the PF Tek using vermiculite and brown rice flower jars. I had full colonization within a couple weeks but I got a bit over-excited and did not wait for pinheads to form before birthing them. Additionally, the cakes were not dunked and rolled before being placed in the fruiting chamber. Misting and fanning began a couple days after birthing; however, no pinheads appeared until about 6 days after birthing. Then, once pinheads appeared, they only grew from the bottom of the cake (where the dry vermiculite from the jar casing had been). I suspect that this may have been due to neglecting the dunk and roll step.
I am hoping for some advice on how this could be improved for the next spawn. I would like to try breaking one of the cakes apart and scattering it across the perlite in the fruiting chamber, but I would also like to see the PF Tek succeed with fruiting directly off of the cake. I have included a picture of what is currently going on. Please let me know if I'm missing something or made a fatal error at some point along the way.
P.S. Although I have some modification to make to promote continuous evaporation of the perlite in the fruiting chamber, I have been closely monitoring temperature and humidity as well as providing light using a combination of LED plant lights and indirect natural sunlight. Misting and fanning takes place daily.

Skipping the dunk and roll was your mistake. Dont break the cakes up. You can always still dunk and roll whenever you want. No one is going to download that file. You will have to upload a pic and Copy the code it gives you.

Ill throw out a guess but I'm no expert the bottom is the only place with proper moisture content, the vermiculite is sucking moisture out of the perlite and providing your cake with the moisture it needs to fruit! tek should be followed they are tried and true methods! if you had dunked I'm sure your results would be much better! I know its exciting and patience sucks! You've had greater success than me at this point!!! I've only grown some interesting molds.

I guess I glossed over that step. There is another one incubating that will certainly be getting the dunk and roll treatment. Thank you for the posting advice, I will use that method moving forward.

And thank you for the words of encouragement Tallman. The first mushroom was picked today. The blue bruising was exciting as well.

If you are wanting to crumble your cakes then you can do so with fresh cakes and add the crumbled cakes to a coco/verm substrate for a mono tub. In my opinion, mono tubs are so much more fun growing, you get a higher yield, and you don't have to worry about misting and fanning as much!

Would you not recommend doing a monotub and crumbling the cakes with perlite? It seems that vermiculite may be required for fruiting.

No I don’t think you should crumble cakes up with perlite. Perlite is used in shotgun fruiting chambers to help withhold humidity. There is no kind of sustenance for the mycelium to grow and produce fruit. If you want to crumble your cakes, you need to make some substrate:
You need a brick of coco coir (500g) to 2 quarts of vermiculite to 4q of water to no less than 4-4.5 quarts of spawn.
First, you’ll wanna add the coir brick to a 5 gal. bucket and then add the 2q of vermiculite. Next, you’ll want to boil the 4q of water and add to the bucket and then putting the lid on. You’ll want to let it sit for a total of 24 hrs but wait until about the 10th-12th hour to shake the bucket to mix the contents together.
After 24hrs, you’ll want to take the lid off and with an alcohol sterilized spoon, finish mixing everything together evenly. To see if you have the right amount of moisture in your substrate, grab a handful and make a fist and water should leak from your hand. This is called field capacity, it is the amount of water a soil can hold.
Now, you’ll want to birth your brf cakes and crumble them all up evenly in a sterilized bowl, add a layer of substrate about 1-1.5 inches to your mono tub and then disperse the crumbled cake evenly on top then add another 1 in of substrate on top of that and continue until you have no more spawn. You’ll want to tape your FAE holes on your monotub while your spawn colonizes the substrate, also make sure there are some holes in the top of the mono tub to allow for a little FAE during the time it’s colonizing.
