Tiger King netflix documentary discussion 1

If you haven't watched it go watch it and then come back to avoid spoilers.
Just finished bingeing it yesterday on Netflix, seriously amazing. Everyone should check it out if they haven't. It's incredibly wild on so many levels, really hope they do a part 2.
It's been so popular that they re opened a cold case into the missing husband of Carole: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/popularity-netflix-s-tiger-king-prompts-sheriff-ask-leads-1997-n1172191
Those of you who have finished it, what did you think?
Joe Exotic just filed a lawsuit against the people who arrested him: https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-03-30/joe-exotic-files-94-million-lawsuit-over-his-prosecution
Quote:
A former Oklahoma zookeeper sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in a murder-for-hire plot has filed a federal lawsuit seeking nearly $94 million in damages, claiming among other things that he was convicted based on false and perjured testimony.
Joseph Maldonado-Passage, also known as “Joe Exotic,” filed the lawsuit March 17 in federal court in Oklahoma City. Among the defendants are the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the assistant U.S. attorney who prosecuted him and several witnesses in the case.

I too binged Tiger King yesterday, while I was on acid lol. It was pretty entertaining since I had never heard of the guy prior to the netflix release. I would not trust any of those people in the show. I think Carole Baskin could easily have been involved in the disappearance of Don Lewis. Shit seemed surreal.

She was 100% involved, maybe didn't literally feed him to tigers like people think but she definitely knows.
The way she laughs while talking about shit like how "I couldn't even fit a hand into our meat grinder let alone a skinny old man" is really off putting. She also went out of her way to try and paint it as an old age related issue where he got forgetful and lost or some shit. But all his other close family/friends say he didn't show signs of Alzheimer's. Not only that but she happened to meet her police Sergent brother at 3am the night before she reported her husband missing...
She also tried way to hard to say she had no real relationship with her brother, so why would he help her. Well maybe for the millions of dollars she inherited from her missing husband after fucking his first wife/kids out of all but a fraction of the inheritance.
Not to mention her husband had filed for a restraining order that didn't get approved, and said she threatened his life and hid his gun. So many damn red flags, but the sherrifs department ran by her brother didn't find any leads
Have seen a lot of speculation that her husband was a drug dealer. The documentary goes out of the way to say he had easily 5-10+ million but never say how he made any of it, other than "he had a green thumb with money". He owned a bunch of small planes and loved Cuba, etc.

Apparently the crocs that were burned to death were owned by Michael Jackson as well: https://people.com/tv/tiger-king-joe-exotic-claims-alligators-died-zoo-fire-once-belonged-to-michael-jackson/
Quote:
Following the fire, Maldonado-Passage told the Los Angeles Times that Jackson’s seven alligators and a crocodile had died in the blaze. According to the outlet, the exotic pets were taken from Jackson’s Neverland Ranch following its closure.
Joe must have met a lot of crazy people while selling exotic animals.

Pretty much what me and my gf theorized. The whole thing is sketchy as fuck and that bitch is no way fucking innocent i'd bet money on it.

She came across as super sociopathic or something to me, wouldn't doubt for a second she could kill in cold blood if it helped "the cause" AKA making money off people who love nature/big cats.

Didn't he come in 3rd? He ran for president first apparently in 2016, and was planning on running again in 2020 after the whole governor thing didn't work out.

Yeah it's creepy how she is pretty skilled at sounding normal, but occasionally she will slip up and say stuff that she believes sounds normal but totally doesn't. Six year difference in ages so of course they had no relationship whatsoever and might as well have been complete strangers, goes without saying. It's just weird that she thought that was a good cover story. Not that I don't believe it's true from her perspective that their family connection counts for nothing. But it's like she's unable to relate to the idea that her brother would want to defend her because she's family, even if they weren't that close.
Also weird when she was talking about how she takes no notice whatsoever of the volunteers until they have been around for 4 or 5 years.

Oklafuckinggoddamnhoma! Only good thing I got from my 4.5 year detention there was a nursing degree. SE OK in particular is a fucking nightmare, beautiful country, but some or most of the people there are fucking freaks! Seems like USA rural areas in particular are freaky. Especially the southern ones.
Also, why do speed freaks always look like speed freaks?

Honestly, the whole lot of those exotic animal owners abusers deserve nothing less than to be slowly eaten alive by their respective captives.

She did leave home at 15 apparently, but even that doesn't mean she'd have "no relationship with my brother". Especially years later after marrying a millionaire, I'm sure that made her family more forgiving or willing to pretend to be at least.
Also in the years of running big cat rescues she never had to call the local police department? She had multiple threats on her life and surely vandals, etc, but never was in contact with her brother about it?
Seems pretty unlikely her brother would ignore all the shit going down at the cat rescue being the local sheriff.
Then there was the missing van found at the airport, seems like the perfect thing to do if you want everyone to believe the guy vanished on his own. And seems like the stupidest thing to do if the husband actually wanted to escape. It just screams coverup, and sounds like something the sheriff brother might think of. "He owns planes so lets just drive his van to the airport, people will think he took off". And even if that was Caroles idea a Sheriff brother would make it easier to pull off.

I agree about the main people, but I felt bad for some of the random employees working under Joe. Like the one who had a hand torn off by a tiger and went back to work in 5 days, or the guy with long hair who was an addict before working there and clearly loved the tigers. The interview with him at the end surrounded by liquor bottles was heartbraking, dude just wanted to take care of his tigers.
Joe kind of fucked over all his misfit employees with how he mismanaged the park, wasting money running for president and governor and with the Carole feud. Seemed like they had a decent set up at least and could have made it much better if they worked at it.
Seems like stardom really got to Joe and Carole, they both turned into social media whores exploiting big cats in almost the same yet different ways.

I finished episode 2 last night and honestly so far I'm disappointed.
So far I don't find it to be the same caliber as a Making a Murderer, Evil Genius, Wild Wild Country, The Jinx etc.
I'll prolly keep watching though. Fuck it... global pandemic baby

It gets crazier and crazier, watching it was a blur but I think it starts throwing the twists in episodes 3-4 and beyond.
From what I remember the first 2 episodes are mainly backgrounds on Joe and Carole.

Yes I just finished watching it. Everything escalated quickly after the first episode or two. I thought it was good.
