Outdoor Cyans grow/transplant

Got some mycelium and compost from a local patch that I'm trying to grow/transplant in my backyard under a cherry tree. The space is well shaded for the hot northern California summer. I mixed the mycelium and compost of the cyanescens with steer manure and vermiculite.
Plan is to add a mixture of peatmoss with alder wood chips as my top layer.
Question is, in the meantime should I add a little bit of chips on top and cover with cardboard for the spring/summer to keep the mixture protected instead of the plastic bag I have now??

Steer manure is irrelevent and possibly harmful. You just need hardwood chips. See this

Thank you for the input. With what I've already done, what would u recommend I do to adjust? Pasteurize some alder chips and try to mix them in to the bed?

Dont need to pasturize them but i would at least soak them in water, mixing a little soil or in your case poo into the mix will help the myc decompose the chips

You could pasteurize the chips if you like. I have had success just carrying a shovelful of myc to the new bed, throwing it on the chips, and covering it up with more chips. I start with totally rain soaked chips, no other preparation.
If one was starting from spores, using grain or such, sterile approach is appropriate. But the mycelium is very resiliant, in my three years experience with it at this point.

The fastest way to start a new patch is to transplant a section from an existing patch to a new mulch pile while keeping the pins and mycelium network intact. You will know you succeeded when the pins matute and you can enjoy the fruits of your labor right away instead of waiting an entire season Here is an example 2 days after a transplant of a coffee cup sized section of the colonized woodchips with pins to a fresh mulch bed.

He's in CA, unlikely he's got pins. But that would be fun. The mushrooms in the pic don't look like Ps. cyanescens, are we talking the same kind of cyans?
OP, If your summers are hot and dry, Ps. cyans may have a tough time.

I have posted some pictures of mushrooms from this patch to make sure they were psilocybe cyanescens. I took a spore print and it backed it up as well. I do live in northern California in the valley where the summers are hot so def not ideal for cyan grows but I've got good shade and can insulate with cardboard/plastic bags/leaves. Here are some pictures of the patch I found in the winter where I got the mycelium/decaying mushrooms from for transplant.

What type of chips do you use? I got some alder chips for smoking but cant really find wood chips other than general mulch bags at like home depot.

Went back to the patch I know of for some more mycelium and with the current rain and drop in temp to the 40-60 range the red has been some recent fruiting. Got some of the myc and older fruit bodies and a couple pins and put them in my beds with soaked alder chips/soaked maple pellets. Hopefully this will set me up for some good mycelium growth this summer and fruiting in the late fall.

Absolutely not. Anything but cedar. Hardwoods best. Cedar has specific phenols, I believe, that suprress fungal growth. Pines aren't great, juniper probably bad. I use Alder which is cyan superfuel.

These were fruiting in the spring? That's great. I thought Cyans were only in the fall, or maybe that is just in PNW and they are spring in Cali. In any case what a find! Sweet to get an easy shortcut to get a patch started!
Looking forward to seeing the progress. I am just starting my azure and cyan spores on agar right now.. racing the clock to get them going in time to see something this fall.

No, I made sure to avoid Cedar. This is mostly a pine mixture with some other woods in there but not cedar. Have a finer "path mulch" with a medium nugget mulch on top.

I would have used Alder if I could find it in anything other than tiny bags. What I got is a mixture of pine which I havent heard any negative things about and douglas fir.
