Flow Hood

Hello, Newbie here . I've read numerous posts on making a flow hood and I personally don't have the skill set or tools required to build one. I would love to find someone in my neck of the woods ( SF Bay Area ) who might help me build one but not sure how to find that person. Looked at the ones on fungiperfecti but feel they're too expensive. I'm sure it's worth every penny. Just can't justify the expense. My wife would freak out if I spent $900 on one. The Bonsai hood is selling for $450 but read comments here about it being too small. Any thoughts? I'm currently using a homemade glove box and it's working great but can't stand the confinement of space Thanks, M

I can't help you build a flow hood, but if you are worried about being confined, you could always make a bigger still air box ( I'm sure you meant still air box, not glovebox right?).
The one I use is 200qt I think... pretty roomy

You’re better off using a SAB without any gloves attached to the box (reducing drafts from suction and allowing for non turbulent air movement), because unless you’re following a $500+ tek the flow hood really isn’t worth it. I would get a bigger container if cramped space is the only issue you are facing, otherwise save up a little cheese and prototype a more economical build that would add a decent amount of workspace. Keep up the work!!

Your gonna spend 400-800 building one if you don't have the tools.

Thanks for the replies everyone. One of Us is correct . I'm using a SAB. My gloves are attached. I'll remove them and see if that helps. Thanks OJ Thanks M

Buy a pre-built ready to go one. You can get 2x4 hoods for $500 brand new. Doesn't get much better than a 2ft by 4ft space!

Envirco Mac 10 on eBay I use mine nearly every day and it's awesome. These are brand new too! Only $350. But shipping is the killer, can always bid them for less! Why go through the hassle of building a smaller one for more money, these are great.

That’s a good find, could definitely beat most teks too if you tried one and put it up for the fam!! I’d like to see how it performs in comparison to other flow methods and seeing how much its environment would impact it!

I use mine in a standard sized small bedroom, let it run for an hour before working, and I haven't had any problems with contamination, the filters are 99.99% at .3 micron with a 90fpm blower. I have a 2015 model and it only uses 250-300w as well. They are well built and overall just a great machine. Plug and play

I did a search on eBay and I didn't find any laminar flow filters under Enviro Mac10. Those are for clean rooms but I don't know if it makes for a good flowhood.

Some older models are heavier and a lot wider. The newer ones are only about 60-70 pounds, fairly light for a large 2x4 area. They have filter and fan already built in. The ones linked are a newer thinner version and you can expect them to weigh about 70 pounds.
They definitely make for good flowhoods, been using mine with 100% success, haven't had a contamination yet out of hundreds of agar plates.
The link I gave is a pretty great deal for what you get and they are in new condition. Attach a simple pre filter, throw it on a metal work bench table, plug it in, you're good to go. Some may require a 3 way prong to be attached and wired but that's fairly easy and simple.

Ya, I was wondering why they said the unit must be removed from the ceiling to replace the filter, lol... so what's the difference anyway? Is the flow not laminar or something?

Thanks for the link Eclipse. Unfortunately, if I read it correctly, shipping is $270 😳 I also have limited room and wouldn't be able to fit a 2x4 box on my counter space. That's why the bonsai flow hood is appealing to me. It's 15x15 I'm now wondering what are most people using? SAB or flow hood ? Thanks, M

Most beginners and those strapped for cash (me😁) are using SAB for a decent amount of time. I think anyone that can afford lams usually have a great lab area they have made to do transfers in an uncontaminated area with no disturbances. If you have the money, it pays off to reduce the amount of contamination you allow in a workspace by improving every step in the process.
