1 quart water per quarter brick of coir for shoebox?

When making a shoebox I'm going to follow Damion5050's elementary coir tek. Since I'm just making one shoebox I'm just going to cut a quarter of a brick of coir. So following that tek, that means only one quart of water is needed. For those that have already done a ton of these does a quart of water per quarter of a brick sound about right for field capacity? I'm also planning on adding 1/2 a quart of verm. Does this sound about right to be prepped for field capacity? Or am I supposed to squeeze out each handful as I go?
I've heard problems with this tek that it makes the coir too wet and your bulk substrate won't colonize...? I used it before and my bulk substrate never colonized at all, so I'm wondering if the coir was too wet and it never took off. I want to get it right for this next run, so should I squeeze out each handful as I go? Will I risk making it too dry doing this? What have you found to be the right mix?

Damon5050's coir tek also calls for vermiculite. I don't like verm, so I go for BOD's Bucket TEK for Coir substrate
Basically, just weigh the coir after you're done sawing, multiply by 5 and that's the weight of the water you should add to it. If it's too wet, you can add some verm at that point to absorb some.

I was planning on adding half a quart of verm.

Just go on the dry side and test it when it cools before you use it. Add water if needed.
I recommend using corse verm if available. Idk about all this no verm business. Tried it and saw poorer results. Verm is cheap

Strom it is 2020, Verm is out. Joking.
Yeah I boil about a half a PC and eyeball it. Smartattack has a great write up for coir prep. It allows for the coir to drain excess water off.
If you spawn to bulk ratio is right, I don't think it matters all that much though.

Why not just take a some amount of coir (.5 qt?) and see how many ml water you need to get it to field capacity. Then scale it up for however much coir you're gonna use.
For the final batch go under what you calculate. I'd rather add water in than have to add in more coir/verm.
