Questions about navigating your trip. 1

Hello everyone. New tripper here. Short background. 50 years old, never tripped before, educated myself with countless hours of research, and decided to grow my own for my first trip. Tripping for insights, spiritual growth, creativity, and the ability to share my experience with others. Decided to take 3.5 G alone in my garage, with a flower, and Hopkins research playlist. Not going to give a trip report here, but it was a good experience, just not insightful or self reflective. Was hoping to confront some of my issues.
Questions.
1. These insights that people speak of, are they only given when full surrender happens?
2. McKenna speaks of them as being gentle with first timers....could this be a reason behind lack of insight?
3. A couple of times I felt as though I was leaving, or being drawn in, but I couldn’t keep my mind quiet enough to stay focused. Is this where the teaching happens?
FYI had a second trip, with a friend, we both took 5 G, had a fantastic time, but once again no lessons or insight. Any guidance would be awesome. Thanks!

What do you expect from using mushrooms to alter your mental state and sensory perception?

It can be very subtle what the mushrooms teach or show you. You have to listen. But first, yes, you need to accept the experience. You’ll know when it happens; it can feel like you suddenly feel lighter, have a spring in your step.
But you need to be alone, or with a guide, nd maybe try turning the music down so it is just audible. You must close your eyes, or be in complete darkness. Then simply “go with the flow of the trip”. Don’t expect anything. And if you just listen to your psychedlic mind, ponder what it says, then maybe ask questions back, you might be surprised where your next trip takes you.
That’s the key, let the mushrooms guide you.
Good luck, and please keep coming back; it helps all of us DJ Ed

1. No 2. Maybe 3. Just allow yourself to be drawn in and sit with your thoughts. Thats why I like to go lay in my bed, quiet and dark.

Insight, refinement, wisdom, epiphany, these are not attracted to the friendly tripper like fish to bait.
you are the fish, not the bait.
what is your idea of insight? what is your idea of wisdom? what are these connected to?
the difference of thinking when stoned and straight, is that the partial answers hang around a bit longer before fading away, and they mix with the next questions to help enable flashes of insight. Insight from layers, and from questions as much as answers.
if all your ideas are about a good setting, and party, then that is what will hang around and mix with what happens next on your trip, a review and evaluation of how well prepared you are. It's ok, really, psychedelic layered experience is what you make of it, make of it, make of it.
So, what is important to you? that kind of question is the kind of mind set content you want, if you care about insights.

Hello! Welcome!
1) Not exactly. Insights, mystical experiences, and magical experiences are basically random. No one knows exactly when they will happen. However, there are ways to improve your chances. More on that later.
2) Not sure about this quote from McKenna. I would have to do more research for a theory of what he meant.
3) i would say, yes it could. As mentioned, these profound psychedelic experiences just "happen". Theres no pattern really to it. Well, theres sort of a pattern, but its not understood very well.
In my experience, the best way to have a profound, life-changing experience is these conditions:
1) Be in a neutral-Positive mood or Positive Mood before the trip. Have a calm yet excited state of mind.
2) Trip in a place you feel safe and comfortable.
3) Take the "right" dose. Very subjective but theres a sweet spot so to speak for these experiences. Its not always high doses. Common doses can also produce such sxperiences. It really depends on a lot of factors like state of mind, location, time of day, amount of sleep beforehand, people with you, etc.
4) A quiet place to "lose yourself" to the experience. This is where amazing experiences can happen as you quiet to your mind and listen to your inner thoughts and emotions.
Ive found the most helpful trips come from me just "letting go" and trusting the mushrooms 100%. This is why meditation goes so well with tripping, because if you can master your thoughts and feelings, you can almost control your psychedelic trips in a way you want. The reason is they are related practices. So in meditation, the deeper you go into the state, the more profound experiences you can have, which is very much like psychedelics. I highly recommend trying meditation. Very benefical for psychedelic journies and day to day life.
These experiences become better with time as you get more used to the psychedelic state-of-mind.
My advice, dont rush the experience, it will arrive when its time

I think when you try too hard to "focus" is when it almost becomes a distraction.. I guess you could say? I'll tell you this - more mushrooms doesn't always mean you're going to get to that reflective state. I've had some of the most profound experiences on a low dose of mushrooms than higher.
But, my set and setting were both set up for this. I've found to be around nature increases the experience 10 fold. They'll give you what THEY want to.. and NOT what you want. Unfortunately, you can't choose what the seem to unravel for you as well. I've had some WONDERFUL insights, and some TERRIBLE insights that literally would eat me alive - i/e (the way I would talk extremely bad to others. Shutting people out. Being selfish.. etc).
Lower end doses really seem to get you more in the thought process than to be blown away into straight visuals and getting lost on the roller coaster and no time to really analyze your emotions.
This is out of complete personal experience and by no means advocating that lower doses are superior to higher doses - each have their perks. Let your thoughts come to you, and don't "force think" in order to get there. Eventually, it will come - and it'll either be majestic of feel like hell. But the difficult one's are usually the most lasting and something you will think about for weeks to follow.
Don't give up, nor get discouraged. There's a lot of people here that cannot seem to get to the place they would like to be via mushrooms - but they keep up with it.. and stay persistent followed by well guidelines in order to reach a higher state. For some, it comes easier than others. But sometimes, you're so focused on other people's "experiences" (like Mckenna) - you forget how powerful yours are, because you're comparing apples and oranges.
Don't have expectations. This is YOUR trip. No mind is identically similar to each other. I feel like you've been there, but you were more in tune of following someone else's insights and you were silencing yours.
Keep at it brother - I promise it will come. Eat the mushrooms, lay back.. and let the waves fall upon you and carry you into the sunset....

Hmm... I don't think insights are ever "given", they just arise naturally from the enhanced mental clarity that the mushrooms bring.
Forget McKenna, please. Far too much personalization of mushrooms from what little I've encountered. YMMV of course but eschew gurus.
When you feel the draw you have to just give in. Otherwise you're resisting and what you're looking for won't happen.
It's not a teaching, although it can be a transmission. They aren't going to look at what you think you need and parcel something out to you that you need. There's just a shitload of information available via hyperspace, and you personally get to sort through it looking for what you want.
