My tubs 15 days after spawning. What went wrong?
    #26567019 - 03/30/20 11:09 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

So I spawned 3 6qt tubs all using coir/verm as the substrate. The ratio was 1:3 spawn/substrate.

The one with nothing on the top was spawned using 6 x 8oz brf cakes and the other two tubs were done with WBS.

The brf tub seems fully colonized on the sides only.

The other two did not fully colonize either.

I just put them all into fruiting without casing them.

What went wrong here? Are they contaminated? They don't have a smell other than dirt. I waiting 15 days before opening the lids.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I would say 15 days after spawning is about the average time it takes to see pins, meaning half of the time, it takes longer. Keep in fruiting conditions (I actually start fruiting at spawn time) and be patient, everything looks ok to me. Maybe a tad dry (brf box looks dry more than the others possibly why it isn'tmore colonized), but it's hard to tell. I would mist and wait a few more days.

The various degrees of colonization could be from not distributing the spawn evenly, as well as it possibly being dry.

Hey bud,
IME you shouldn't crack them/pull them out until they're fully colonized (and consolidated). C02 needs to build up while colonizing, once fully colonized the tub gets its FAE and light and temp drop (fruiting conditions).

Don't take only my advice, but I'd say def leave the first tub in fruiting conditions, and maybe see if the third tub colonizes more if you put it back into incubation conditions.

Side note; the delay amongst the three tubs could be genetics, varying environmental conditions, presence of competing organisms (and lack thereof), or all/none of the above.

they don't need co2 fresh air light and a temp drop won't cause them to pin early either, full colonization comes first as a pinning trigger

Will that happen with them in fruiting conditions? I am slowing things down by not putting the lids back on?

Sub looks dry. How did you prep your material? Uncooked coir can take longer to colonize.

I used bucket tek and pasturized it that way.

I brick coir, 2 qts vermiculite, 1 cup gypsum, 1 cup spent espresso, 1 gallon boiling distilled water.

Gotcha, mist and wait. 15 days isn't unheard of. With 1:3 you have alot more non nutrious material to colonize.

Are you saying to keep it in fruiting while fanning and misting, or put the lid on and put it back in the dark and wait?

Mist it. Then put it back into fruiting. 12/12 and let it do its thing.

Just misting and fanning and seeing what happens. No major changes so far. I am still not sure if colonization of the tops will continue in fruiting conditions or not.

Next time I will use more grain and wait until they are fully colonized on top.

So after 5 days of fanning 4 times a day and misting once a day there is no visible  change in mycelial growth.
The uncolonized sub feels soft and fluffy like a cake.
I don't think it is too dry. The tubs are getting about 12-14 hours of ambient light per day using sunlight combined with a 6500k led bulb.

Should I see growth by now? Should I  change something?

How do you know it feels soft? Did you touch it? #metoo
