Some second opinions please * 1
    #26566457 - 03/30/20 03:28 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Hello fellow isolationists,

I have some questions about my setup during fruiting.

1, Does the setup look okay to you?

2, "Glistening" is my least favourite word at the moment. The close up picture was taken about an hour after misting and fanning, is it too wet or too dry or goldilocks?

3, Some verm has fallen from my cakes onto the aluminium foil, should I take the cakes off and put them back onto clean pieces of aluminium?

A general observation I have is that I cannot tell, at all, if my house, room or chamber is humid enough. Should I just assume that the mist and fan process is providing enough humidity and stop fretting?

Any other input you folks can offer would be most appreciated.

I also appreciate your patience as these questions are very common, so thank you.

Wow, looks professional AF! I never used SGFCs so I can't offer any real input but looks good to me!!

I wouldn't worry about replacing the aluminum.

Cheers for the input my man.

I didn't think my setup was that great tbh, I suppose when you're too close to something you tend to just see the flaws in it.

Looks really decent. Nice work.

I would first trim back the foil for better performance.

Also, your top-down cake pic looks like its a bit over-misted. Looks like your cake is water-saturated. Let it dry out a bit (but not too much!).

Not sure what the red tape is for, is it for cracks in the plastic perhaps?

Ive found with the SGFC that two bags of perlite make a big difference in performance. So I suggest adding another bag of moist perlite. Its optional but I recommend it.

Thanks man.

I'll trim away the foil. Why is this helpful btw?

May I ask how you can tell that they look over misted? And how long you would recommend until I mist again?

And yes, lol, the tape was for a couple of cracks.

I actually used two whole bags of perlite for it. I do have another, you think that would help if I added it?

Id recommend at least one more bag of perlite, maybe two. The idea is that extra perlite concentrates the humidity to a better level.

The foil-trimming exposes more perlite to the air, which helps moisture production inside the FC.

That cake looks overmisted because it appears soggy and not "moist". Theres a line between those two states. You want it to have water inside but not soggy wet on the outside. Its not a big deal if you mist too mist, get gotta wait for it to evaporate a bit.

1. Looks good af

2. Goldilocks

3. No need to be clean

Did you completely saturate soak the perlite before it went into the tub?
If so the misting and fanning should be good and you can always extra
spray tf outta the perlite to keep it soaking wet.

Good job!

I'll add my last bag today then and make sure to trim down the foil.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the reply man.

Yes I soaked the hell out of the perlite, so much so in fact that there was a huge puddle under my FC before I took it up to the spare room.

I came back an hour later and another, somewhat smaller, puddle had appeared. I mopped it up and there was no more water drippage after that. Makes me think that I over soaked the perlite. To clarify, I shook the perlite in my strainer until there were no more water drops coming out.

What do you make of that?

Perlite doesn't absorb moisture.

Perlite is effective at moving moisture.  Its purpose is that it will wick moisture up and through it and evaporate it causing a humid environment if it is enclosed.

Perlite only traps water on its large surface area, consisting of nooks and crevices, and thus releases its water more quickly. In doing so, it can help raise the humidity.

You also think a 3rd bag of perlite would be beneficial then i take it?

IDK, from your pictures you have a decent amount already.

IMO, your chamber is way too large for those 6 cakes.  They don't need that much space.  Also IMO you have too many holes all over, so I don't know how effective it will be at maintaining humidity.  Fewer holes or since you can't go back in time, people use polyfil or micropore tape to cover holes.  That allows GE while holding moisture.

Actually, went back and looked, there's so many holes it is only about 50% there...

Would it make sense to put a damp towel under the perlite, so fresh water is constantly available to be wicced up and into the chamber?

That hole pattern is standard for the SGFC.

I didn’t do cakes in a SGFC for long but I think everything looks fine. A little wet in that close up pic so my only advice would be don’t over think it. Check the cakes every few hours and once the surface looks dry you mist. After a while you’ll know how often you need to be checking.

Condensation is not necessary to have the proper humidity so just watch your cakes and how they respond to misting.

And to the above, you don’t want anything blocking the holes in the bottom of the chamber. You need air to rise up through the moist perlite.

Fair enough, I've never done a SGFC so my opinion is not based on experience.

IME, PF tek days, I had zero holes and fruited well.

Well as an update, i've trimmed the foil and covered up maybe a third of the holes. I've left the holes on the bottom though.

Going to let them dry out a bit throughout the day and see if they need misting later on.

Perfect, no such thing as over soaked perlite. As much humidity possible
with as much free air exchange possible but not loosing humidity. Sounds
like you got it.

My first pf tek grow was back in the days of TIT incubators heated with a fish tank heater. Inoculated in the bathroom and by the “oven TEK” lol. Colonized in heated darkness. Fruited in a tub with no holes, I skipped the drip shield:) but never misted the cakes directly for fear of aborts.

A lot of things will work, especially for cubes, it’s just that the current ideal or most efficient methods are always changing as people try new stuff. I used to throw contaminated grains outside under the condensation drip from my AC unit and would pick up a few dry grams that way lol. Life will find a way.
