In theory notebook paper or used cigarette butts could be used as a filter if done right.

I wouldn't suggest either of those two methods except as an experiment, but they could work. Iron out the details and they could work 100 out of 100 times.

And there's an important point in that it doesn't have to be practical, just fun/interesting and functional in theory for an attempt to be worthwhile. I mean, if it's a hobby and not simply geared towards emulating professional mycologists (not that there's anything wrong with that), part of the fun could be in finding novel ways of doing things. Taking a chance on failure isn't necessarily a bad thing, and if it gets the job and is consistent there's really no foul in doing it more than once.

I now use polyfil stuffed through a 1/4 inch hole.
