Don’t touch the needle with alcohol wipes after being flame sterilized. Just make sure the inoc port is wiped down then stick red hot needle in port. A drop or two of spore solution will cool the needle down enough. Did you pressure cook your coir? Because bulk substrate should be pasteurized, or use the bucket tek. Coir + verm does not need to be properly pasteurized, which is why the bucket tek works.

Did I read that right? That's way too long to be boiling your oats. 30-40 minutes at most before draining and drying.

I agree. I don't soak my grain and at a rolling boil, they take 45 mins at most.

lol okay, good.
- Your oat prep sounds like it's on point.
- Follow all of TrancendingLife's points.
- Leave the H2O2 in the medicine cabinet--it doesn't do much in this hobby except for one or two rare things that don't apply to you here.
- Maybe a liner would help for your next project until you develop a better understanding of conditions.
- Could be that your substrate is getting cached and there's more nutes on the bottom also encouraging growth?
just a side thought.
- Surface and substrate conditions are the biggest factors here I think. Playing a lot trying to dial in FAE could also be contributing. Some of this stuff is "learn as you go." The good news is you're getting fruits, so you're doing okay, just gotta keep at it and keep learning.

This was your first mistake. Coir does not need to be PCed or even pasteurized. Pasteurizing doesn't hurt, but sterilizing it is definitely harmful.

Second mistake. Once flamed, don't wipe the needle.

You're getting bacterial contamination, which would be visually evident in your spawn jars. Spores to grain is notorious for being prone to contamination off the bat. Certainly not saying you cannot get clean spawn, but it's more difficult.
Good luck my friend, it certainly is a steep learning curve, but it is quick!

Curious, how is sterilizing coir harmful? I agree it's definitely unnecessary, but since it's not prone to contamination in the first place and doesn't harbor any microorganisms, I don't see how going the extra step would cause any issues as opposed to say, exposing sterilized grains to open air.

Bucket tek is way quicker for coir. I’m not about to be squeezing the shit to field capacity and loading jars. I’ll just dump it in a bucket with verm and boil some gypsum in a gallon of water and dump.

Truth. I use bucket tek as well. Was just curious why MLPismyOPSEC said that sterilizing coir is actually harmful and not merely a pain in the ass. lol

My understanding is that when the coir is sterilized, it then becomes a big vector for contamination. It may not harbor microorganisms, but i've seen too many old posts where people sterilized coir (when it was thought we should spawn tubs in sterile conditions), and the tubs grew trich before anything else.

You shouldnt sterilze any bulk subs or casing. Anyone else wanna tell them why?

@MLPismyOPSEC: That's interesting, I didn't know coir could be a vector after sterilization since it's so non-nutritional (at least to other organisms). Hpoo, straw, etc., of course... I've seen some really unfortunate threads after people PCed them here and there. I'm lazy as hell, so I'm definitely going to keep using the bucket tek anyway, but that just seals it for me.

Better, some say

Cron, for one. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26360182#26360182
And for 2, I’ve been sterilizing my coir-verm for months now. I like the convenience of having ready-to-use sub at all times, but others have noticed better (faster) results with cooked coir.
