Unconfident colonization. Opinions please!
    #26565577 - 03/29/20 03:31 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hey everyone, I've been absent for a while from Shroomery. I hope everyone is well. I am colonizing some Burma's on rye grain, and I wanted everyone's opinion. It doesn't really look like healthy mycelium but I was hoping it is. I have been experiencing learning curve, after learning curve and I'm finally getting colonizing mycelium. I will explain the process I am using and share some photos. Thank you for your time.

Process:
- remove broken grains
- Rinse grain (few extra times because it’s feed grade)
- add gypsum & soak for 24 hours
- simmer for half hour
- insert into 1L jars (fill 3/4 full) and then cover with foil
- P.C for 120 minutes
- let P.C settle for 3 hours and insert into still air box.
- inject syringe with antiseptic technique (80% ico & cotton swab, and needle red hot then cooled for 30 seconds before injecting).

It’s winter where I am so I have a oil heater in the room with two Hepa filters running. I’m doing direct spore syringe to grain and I realize that’s not 100% efficient and I expect some rate of contamination.

Is this healthy? And does the grain look okay? Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I think I see some yeast contamination in all of those pics. Here's an example of yeast contam:

Thank you, it’s upsetting but I seen a few other posts that look just like it. It’s Most certainly yeast. Always learning something new lol. It was posted that it’s most commonly sourced from hands or an insufficient poly Fill filter. I’m thinking maybe my polyfil filter isn’t tight enough...  and maybe I should use more or buy professional discs to replace the poly fill altogether. I would really like to stay away from buying anything else and changing all my lids. What’s everyone’s thought? does my grain look clean enough. I know it’s cheap rye but I know others say it works just as well. I’ve gone through so many syringes within the past 9 months!!! I will not give up!!!

If you want to get your poly super tight, try tieing a string around an XL bunch of poly. Pull the string through your lid hole first and use that to pull your bunch of poly partway through.  Very effective

Good idea!!! Thank you. I will do that. I am debating if I should treat myself and buy some plastic mushroom spawn lids with the injection ports & filter disc built in. Although I don’t like spending money that’s not needed. The online mushroom supply stores are crazy expensive!

Here is a photo of my current lid tech

Personally, I recommend against it. I made that mistake when I was starting out. You make a few mistakes and start thinking if you just spend more money you'll be able to do it right. Doesn't work that way unfortunately.

My advice is keep going with what you've got ands wait until you have a successful harvest before you start dropping big money on all the bells and whistles. Just my humble opinion from one noob to another.

Feel free too PM me with questions or if you just want to chat.

Also, this is a minor thing but you'll save yourself a some work if you flip those lids upside down. Otherwise the red gasket inside sticks real bad to the glass.

Thank you very much. I will definitely take you up on that. Your right though and it shouldn’t take the fancy/expensive equipment to do a good job. You literally just gave me that extra little confidence boost that I needed. Such an amazing community.
