Is Damion's coir tek overly wet?

Following Damion5050's coir tek last time, my tub never took off colonizing, it just sat there for a week doing nothing, and I ended up just throwing it out. I just saw a couple threads about the tek, and am wondering has anyone ever had a problem with this tek? I'm thinking maybe that's why my tub never took off colonizing because it could of been too wet, and maybe 4 quarts of boiling water per coir brick is way too much. Is this a known problem of this tek? My tub never took off colonizing, and I've heard if your bulk is too wet then it won't perform. What have your experiences been with it? And how many quarts of water do you mix with your coir and verm?

I use 4 quarts, one brick, and 2 quarts of vermiculite per bucket I'm preparing. When I squeeze a good palm full it squirt trickles then drips. Letting a tub only sit for one week isn't enough time to see anything happening through your top layer probably. I don't use a top layer so I see it going in 24-48hrs.

Yeah, I agree that 4quarts for one block without verm is way to fucking much. This amounts to 86% water content in the substrate (for example with edibles you hydrate the substrate to 60-65%). For cubes I only use coir without verm, and 70-75% hydration seems to be the sweet spot for me. This means between 1.6 to 2 quarts water per 650g block. There will be some dry pieces left, so be sure to mix well. This gives me fluffy coir that only starts dripping when pressing really hard.

Shouldn't really matter if you are checking for field capacity when you combine your spawn.

Well I'm planning to do it with the verm, so 4 quarts of water with 2 quarts of verm and a coir brick are correct then? Or do you still find it overly wet? Like my last tub before nothing happened. I'm not talking about just the top layer. No colonization happened throughout the substrate itself, nada.
And if just using a brick of coir, you only use just less than 2 quarts of water?

Yeah I didn't think I had to do that because they say if you follow a tek on here to a T everything will work out. I just know nothing happened with my tub last time. I thought the tek is supposed to already be prepped at field capacity, I didn't know I had to squeeze each handful to get water out.

When I first used the damion5050 substrate prep, I found it to be too wet. I had to add quite a bit more verm and I think some coir as well. You should always check field capacity before using it. There are differences between coir also. I get a handful of the hydrated sub and squeeze the shit out of it. A slight stream at the most and a drip or two at least is how it should be. Bod has a weight of water to weight of coir ratio on his bucket tek that is spot on.

I'd rather use 3quarts of water with one block of coir and 4 quarts verm. You can easily add more water if needed, while adding more coir/verm and making sure it's evenly hydrated is more troublesome (but possible of course). It should start just slightly dripping when pressing a handful really hard.
