Is this contams on my petri dishes?
    #26564004 - 03/28/20 07:17 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hello, shroomers. Hope your social distancing is going well.

I'm new to this and just hoping that some more experienced folk could tell me if these are contams in these photos. If the contam has a name, that would be helpful as well!

On this dish , I can see some mycelium that looks more like I've seen in photos online on the left, but on the right it's much more "fluffy" and doesn't seem to be growing "outward" horizontally like it is on the left.

I plan on transferring the healthy looking mycelium after this post but would like to know if the other stuff is normal.

Here is another image with even more fluff.

And a couple more images:

Appreciate the responses!  I did a transfer for the left side of the first image.  Just going to comment on the "fluffy stuff" after searching the forum for similar posts.  Hopefully this will help in case other new folks hop into this thread.

I believe that the "fluffy" growth is just tomentose mycelium and not contaminants.  If anyone can tell me if this is true or not, that would be great.

From what I've read it's best not to transfer this but to let it grow and wait for it to branch out.  Apparently I could make it work and I might get mushrooms but the rhizomorphic growth is just more reliable.

Also from what I've read that I may have this growth due to "the agar recipe, the % nutrition, and environmental conditions" so maybe I'll start with my agar recipe.  I kind of eyeballed it.

I'm a noob so anyone feel free to step in and educate me if I am wrong.

I was chilling with my pet bats and want to offer a differing perspective.

I think your plates look great, good transfer idea, and keep it up.

I think the fluffiness is tomentose like you said.  The majority opinion is that anything other than rhizomorphic growth is indicative of contamination.  Well, I've spent a lot of time with mycelium recently, and from what I can tell it just does what it wants.  Cubensis mycelium can take different forms and reacts to many different factors in the environment.  Plus when you are starting from spores you have thousands if not millions of different mycelial strains competing.  Sometimes they cooperate and coordinate, but not always.

I think everyone favors rhizomorphic growth because it is distinctive.  Psilocybe cubensis rhizomorphic growth is easy to identify so you know what you got.  Other forms of psilocybe cubensis mycelium is not so easy to distinguish from contaminants and that uncertainty makes it less favorable.

That said, uniform growth means whatever cubensis you have is at least able to coordinate and work together, so isolating and transfering is beneficial.  Your first and third pictures look totally healthy all over.

The middle picture is healthy, but it looks like there is lots of competing activity, so good to isolate sections.
