Softwood monotub (preliminary test) 1

I am currently testing a bulk substrate to which I intend to transfer colonized birdseed. After about one week, the transfer appears to be healthy and on its way to producing fruits.

Bulk substrate composition: -4 parts softwood (NOTE: I am NOT sure what type of wood this is!) -1 part alfalfa (Nitrogen-rich supplement) -Spoonful of gypsum (Calcium supplement for mycelium metabolism)

Bulk substrate preparation: -Mix wet, and allow to soak for several hours -Drain until ~75% moisture -Separate into glass jars and sterilize for 1hr at 15psi
THE QUESTION Does this appear to be a legit substrate? I intend to transfer the following colonized jars to a 66qt tub soon. I appreciate any tips on what I may do to improve.

Thanks! (This is my first post!)

What species are you growing? Is it a woodlover?

B+ cubensis is a secondary decomposer. You will not have the best results on wood, as it is considered a dung lover. Im sure you will get some fruit but as said above casing will help you gain better results.

Thanks again cronicr -- the sterilized Jiffy starter is colonizing very quickly as a casing layer:

Cheers

Good morning cronicr -- a quick follow-up question about casing.
First off, thanks for the tip to add casing. I got some fruits from the experimental tub:

I recently spawned fully-colonized woodshaving-alfalfa hay to sterilized horse poo in 54qt and 66qt tubs. Three days after spawn:

Five days after spawn:

My question: At what point do I case? I'm thinking to use a Stamets-recommended casing of peat moss (20), hydrated lime (1) and gypsum (1). Greatly appreciate any words -- thanks in advance.
PS. I don't intend to make a habit of taking pictures during colonization, this is just for the sake of research!
