Bacterial contamination, but good growth
    #26563000 - 03/28/20 11:40 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

So I inoculated a spawn bag that had difficulty colonizing. Stalled around 50% for a couple of weeks, crushed it up inside the bag and then it quickly continued to colonize to 99% (one tiny patch simply would not colonize after several days). I also noticed a sour smell when sniffing the filter patch which I assume was bacteria messing up the colonization process.

I decided to spawn to bulk sub anyway just out of curiosity thinking I'm going to chuck this stuff anyway. Interestingly, the bulk substrate seems to be colonizing fine and the smell is very mild now, almost unnoticeable. It is fully colonized with some nice knots forming on day 7. On days 1-4 the smell was definitely more noticeable.

Is there any way this is salvageable? Can the bacteria eventually be killed off by the mycelium once it is healthy enough? Am I retarded for thinking that?

Here's some additional info if you all find it is relevant:
Bulk sub: coco coir, verm, store-bought cow manure, coffee grounds, plaster of paris.
Bulk sub was pasteurized at 170F for about 3 hours.
Spawn bag was from MWGK, original rye spawn bag.
Inoculated with spore syringe of PESA.

I hope everyone is in good health, physically and mentally!

Hope you're doing well also!! Bacterial contamination is interesting
because even with it the mycelium can still strive and produce good
fruits. At this point I'd reccomend exposing it to fruiting conditions.
Giving it the FAE and 12/12 light that it needs. It's hard to be certain
without any pics.

Only one way to find out whether the myc will overcome. I wouldn't use coffee grounds in your future bulk subs. They are very prone to contamination.

I’ve spawned many bacterial jars. As long as they get to like 95% or above I’ll use them and they all grew ok. Some would have the knots turn yellow and mutate a bunch but that’s about it.
