Micropore tape or other alternatives for grain jar lids
    #26562691 - 03/28/20 08:38 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hi
I hope to do the grain pf tek  in glass jars.A Problem is with the lids though. I cant get my hands on tyvek,Polyfil or SFDs as all the shops are closed for the next few weeks due to the lockdown. I only have access to a pharmacy. They have micropore tape. Would this be good enough for the holes in the lid or will it risk contamination?
Is there anything else I could get from a pharmacy that I could use?
thanks in advance.

Yeah, should be fine. If it is really thin maybe double them up

Do you know any other materials I could use?

So after I inoculate and pull the syringe out Do I quickly cover it over with another layer of micropore tape?

I've seen people use band aids. Not a good idea but when times are tuff use what ever you can get.

I suppose you could try your luck with a cotton ball or sponge or something, although you would have better results with the micropore tape. Yeah, once you inoculate you want to cover the hole.

Micropore works fine. I use it a lot on jars & pp5 containers. I only use 1 strip over the holes. I found putting double strips slows colonization slightly.

Yes, just make sure it doesn’t get wet. (Foil layer)

The glass jars I have are too big for my pressure cooker. Would something like these plastic containers work for the grain TEK?

Some of those are made of plastics that are suitable for autoclaving. What does the recycling sign say?

Pp5 will be fine in the pressure cooker. It just looked off for me. It would hold up.
