Azurescens outdoor bed got spongy, didn't produce - ideas?
    #26561990 - 03/27/20 07:45 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

About a year ago, I laid down an azurescens bed in alder chips, using the same techniques as for my cyan bed.  The chips are excellent coarse alder chips.  I spawned to the bed about this time last year.  Over the summer, the bed colonized well, and was solid in july.  Then it got softer.  It did not spawn last fall.  Late in fall, I got another load of chips, and top dressed the bed in December.  Checking it just now, the underlying bed has white mycelia which isn't dead yet, but is spongy.  The top layer of chips is colonizing well, from the lower level.  The upper layer is already solid, brick like. You can see the duller mycelia in the bad pic, and the solid myc in the good, from a foot away in the bed.  The bad myc has cohesion, but is soft, like wet toilet paper.  The good mycelia has a very strong, rigid consistency.  The bad mycelia was good, awesome even, last June.

Bad Mycelia

Good Mycelia

There is winecap (Stropharia russulo-annulata) mycelia around, which came up around the edges of the patch, but never in the center.  I also attempted morels (Morchella Importuna)  near this bed two years ago.

Its interesting, because the mycelia is clearly still viable; it has rapidly invaded the new chips.  I worry that the new chips will flag as well in coming months.

The patch is in shade, in growing zone 8b.

Any ideas?
