I was thinking the same thing when you say it's staining are we talking about the whole mushroom? including the stem and if so can you upload a pic of the bruising? looking at the pics you have provided the stem seems to have a yellowish stain instead of blackish blue...Also the gills don't match up!!

It Is Called "Large Common Psilocybe" In Some Books Like "The National Audubon Society Field Guide To North American Mushrooms". However, Most Of Us Call It The Scientific Name "Psilocybe Cubensis".

These Are Not Psilocybe Cubensis, They Are Protostropharia Semiglobata Like Others Have Said.

Also, Psilocybe Cubensis Doesn't Grow Wildy In California.

There Are No Active Dung Loving Species In California. Your Best Bet Would Be To Look For Psilocybe Cyanescens Or Psilocybe Ovoideocystidiata.

Here Is A List Of Actives That Grow In California (Scroll Down To California)

Panaeolus cinctulus and panaeolus bisporus are both dung dwellers.

Yes,, but if you read the habitat discription here and anywhere else it says that it's rare to find cinctulus on dung. It's more common on well kept grass. Not impossible but unlikely. Of course if you find a Panaeolus on dung for sure i.d. it. It could very well be cinctulus. But like I said, it is more likely to find in grass.

Panaeolus cinctulus is very common in horse dung. Common in manured grass as well, but so is panaeolus cyanescens.

I have found cinctulus growing directly from horse, and cow dung many times.

This is not my picture, but you get the picture :nerd:

Pan. Cinctulus Can Grow From Dung, & It Can Grow From Fertilized Lawns & Gardens Too. Therefor, It Is Not Soley A "Dung Loving Species".

Panaeolus Bisporus Is A Dung Loving Species But Is More Of A Rare Find. Not A Common Species.

People Regulary Find Cyans & Oviod's In California, But Not Pan. Bisporus.
