Is this bacteria growth?
    #26559860 - 03/26/20 07:24 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

These jars are at 80% colonization. One of them I noticed these about 5 days ago and they haven’t grown. Looks like bacterial infection but wanted to know for sure. They’ve been sitting at around 80degrees temps, and were inoculated on March 4th. Standard BRF cake with 2:1 ratio of verm to BRF and distilled water. Sterile technique wasn’t the best. No glovebox was used. Nitrile Gloves and area were cleaned with Lysol and 70% ISO alcohol.

Looks like it needs to. Come out of the jar. Are those pins on the top? You may have gotten water into your dry layer during the PC cycle

What do you mean it all looks rough? Because of the excess moisture?

The brown spots up top are what are in question. They haven’t grown at all in size in days. Thought they could be pins. Am I able to birth the cakes with around 85% colonization?

Are the fruits still viable even with contamination like that?

Yup. Mushrooms dont uptake infections like bacteria. They do uptake toxic chemicals thou, as Paul Stamets has mentioned.

Okay, sick. So should I let it get to 100% and consolidate as usual?

I didn’t flame sterilize the syringe at all. (I know, not the best sterile technique at all). Recently I did popcorn TEK and flame sterilized the syringe in a glovebox and cleaned the whole thing and lids. I did use a sterile alcohol wipe to wipe the syringe after I had flame sterilized it. Is that a bad thing? They have been progressing very well so far no contamination’s

Yeah, that is a bad thing. If you flame sterilize a needle, scalpel etc. don’t wipe it with iso or anything else. Fire will sterilize it. Wiping it introduces contaminates.
