The ease of breaking up colonized grain jars

Hey guys, After having a couple bacterial contams in some colonized jars, I have the idea that healthy colonized grains are super easy to break up only takes a couple shakes. On the other hand, trying to break up bacterial contamed jars is like using a goddamn shakeweight and is much more work. Im pretty new to this hobby, but ive sort of noticed a pattern and have seperated the jars which were hard to shake, and the ones that are easy in order to see if my hypothesis is correct. Anyone else notice this pattern before? Am I guessing correctly? Thanks in advance guys

I wouldn't put much faith in your shake test as a way to identify contaminants. Grains can be difficult to break up with strong mycelium growth too. Contaminants are usually easy to spot with your eyes, maybe not right away but they should be visible before colonization is complete and will inhibit that colonization or make excessive liquid appear in your jars/bags. If you're getting a high percentage of contaminated grains and it isn't being caused by the inoculant I would increase your sterilization times.

Thanks for the input! It was for sure from my inoculant. I used many different agar plates assuming anything that was white was good myc. Ive learned from that, I’m using my eyes as well after studying lots of pictures and threads of healthy colonizations. I’ve been having trouble with spiky looking mycellium. The majority of the jar looks good but on parts of the glass theres stringy, spiky looking myc. I shook up the jars and am waiting to see if they grow back within the next 2 days.

Yup. That looks good. It is just rizo in 3D. The myc is looking for somewhere else to go. It is basically begging for some substrate, baby.
