Spent substrate
    #26557745 - 03/25/20 07:52 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Quick question, looking for some input.  Usually I’ve been taking my spent subs around several spots on our property.  As I finally got off my ass and got the wife a garden setup, we got a compost bin from tractor supply that you turn once a week......we’ve got plenty of straw and chicken shit to go in it, but I was wondering if anybody else throws spent subs in their compost piles/bins....Let’s hear it.

I’ve definitely heard of people doing it, but then you gotta look inside for compost shrooms before you turn it every week lol.

I just started dumping my old subs in the compost.

Still a little cold here at night but I’m hoping something comes of it this spring.

I dump spent sub in my compost pile as well as spread or mix in with my gardens.

Never heard of any success stories at the scope I think you are talking about. But I always dig a shallow hole, upside-down my tub into it and cover with a very thin layer of dirt and get some fruits every time -just water it like a plant. If you want to increase your yields, adding just a small amount of compost to the bottom of the hole appears to add enough nutrition to get much more fruiting. That's as far as I have ever gone with the idea.

Fungus compost is some of the nicest and most expensive there is.

I live in a city and can't do this so I chop mine into tiny pices
using a metal putty blade. Then scoop into bucket and fill with water
and let them soak for two days stirring them now and then. Then I use
a paint/masonry stirrer on a powerful drill to pulverize it to mush
then i flush it a little at a time down the toilet! Lmao

Wowza! For realza?  I haven't lived in an  apartment type deal in years so please do excuse my ignorance. The last time I DID though there was a dumpster. The time before that was a cemetery (it was creepy, many weird stories to tell...). Honest to the gods, I have never heard of anyone going through so much trouble as you described above ^ to grow the holy fungus in an urban setting. You rule dude! I love to hear stories of perseverance. The world needs more people like you

Yeah man, just throw em in a tarp with some horse poo and straw in a somewhat shady spot. The tarp retains the moisture so it doesn't leak out through the ground or evaporate on those hot summer days.

OP, you’re on the right track. Compost the hell outta them.
I take my old substrate over to a buddy’s house and let him take whatever grows.

Rumfor, you’re crazy bro. Just put the substrate in a garbage bag and toss it in the dumpster outside your complex.
Or drive it to the country and dump in the woods.
Flushing all that down the toilet will cause major issues with the plumbing.

Yeah, exactly. An old friend lived in a Wash. D.C. apartment and my suit and tie guy just buried the spent tub under your typical industrial garbage planted shrubbery bushes. On his way to work in the morning he would give it a cursry glance; at sun down he would go out and water the holes like he was watering a plant. He had good flushes; not great flushes, but good flushes.

Hey, you gotta get rid of the spent tub anyway so why not either get more shrooms, or give it to a gardener if you live in the city. There is always a good way no?

I don't have a dumpster and I don't like setting it on the curb. I'm not
gonna drive it places where vehicle transport raises the probability of
getting caught with it or seen dumping it. On the curb it's also outta
my control. With my method I am completely in control of all variables
it is nothing but seeds and dirt when it goes down. My poops are tuffer
on the drains it's never going to hurt anything and never has for more
years than I care to say lol

As someone who has taken microbiology courses and studied bacteriology as a requirement for bla bla bla. You are wrong. The stuff you are flushing is barely broken down at all. Your poop is thoroughly processed. But to hell with me -just ask a plumber what kind of funk they
pull out of drains 'n stuff. Henry Ford was quoted as saying: Therer is a better way to do it, FIND IT.  And the father of the automotive assembly line made mucho waves throughout our modern world. I don't know you, but I would suggest to anyone in your position to "find a better way". Can't you use your leftover subs to grow beans or sumpin' ?

My family owned and operated a plumbing and septic service for
50 years...it's not hurting anything and I have a 50ft power snake
if it does 😉

That is nice to hear, but why did roto f'n rooter just charge me 535 dollars to scrub my fckn line from house to septic tank? Your family wasn't here  I guess.? I don't give a rats furry ass about your families plumbing licsense; I care about how many drains YOU cleared. How

many sewage lines YOU layed, how many leaky pipes YOU fixed. But you are probs right.  I'm just gonna grind up my xmas tree and pour it down the sink. What evs....

For that much money you could have purchased a power snake and done it
all yourself. It's easy once you know where everything is and get into
it.

I used my substrate to improve my soil. I've also been thinking about using it to feed my worm farm.

Ok all good points.  For clarification, I’m not looking for increased flush, just trying to compost it for the garden.  Something to add to the tumbler that still has some nutes left.  I’ve got pretty shit soil, mostly clay and top soil is hard to come by at the sand pits right now, so I’m amending it the best I can until I can get some good black dirt in for the garden.

Since cubes are primary decomposers, I'd say you should get some nice compost out of it.
