Beginner ID Help

Hi guys. Have only began to find an interest in this in recent times. So as I was driving, I noticed a growth of mushrooms. Snapped a photo from the car and decided I’d give it a try to see if I was able to identify this correctly in my own. Found it too hard to work out (as I’m a total newbie) so went back and plucked a few to try my luck at identifying before I go hunting for real.
I am finding it harder than I thought to identify so thought I’d post here. I forgot to take another pic of the habitat but when I went back they were completely destroyed. I think a lawnmower went over them.
Anyway, I’m totally guessing from my limited experience but I “think” this might be a Cortinarius areolatoimbricatus but really I have no idea.
Habitat: it was growing next to a tree, recently fertilised I think, in parkland area.
South East of Melbourne
Gills: Brown ish orange
Stem: Thick, brownish orange, short/medium length
Cap: Large, Odd shapes, mostly flat. Next to a $2 coin in the photo for size comparison. Brownish orange
Spore print color: Not sure as I threw it away before taking a spore print (sorry, I will make sure to do it next time).
Bruising: Didn’t really notice bruising.
Other information: pics (hope I’ve added them correctly).

Thanks for helping. I figured best to check with others and then I will learn how to identify better.

Looks like a species of Gymnopilus, can't really tell which one without more data.
Welcome to the Shroomery.

Thanks Anglerfish.
For future reference, aside from a spore print, what info should I pay attention to in order to help identify?
Thanks again.

You can read through the following key to get a better grip on general details necessary for identification:
https://www.mushroomexpert.com/major_groups.html
Additionally, you should read descriptions of species you are particularly interested in, and also check out pictures of mushrooms in their habitats.
http://www.mushroomobserver.org and http://inaturalist.org are good resources.

Cool thanks. Will go through those tonight.
One last question, are these things poisonous ones? Safe? I see these types all the time in my area.

There are no poisonous species of Gymnopilus, some of them are mildly hallucinogenic, but I don't think yours belong to that category. They are also very bitter in taste, so all in all second rate to more potent species like Psilocybe subaeruginosa, that will start growing in your area in probably a months time or a little more.
In any case, make sure you never eat anything unless you have a 100% positive identification. Always bring a good camera with you when hunting, and take clear close up shots of all vital features, including habitat shots. You will see lots of good examples of how to take good pictures in the links I provided above.

Gymnopilus are notorious for being bitter af, not to mention weak. I suggest you hit pasture with horses or cows or similar grazing animal's and look for Psilocybe cubensis and Panaeolus cyanescens, Psilocybe subaeruginosa is also starting to fruit in the NSW area. Check out Psilocybe alutacea also, I think it's in season but not 100% certain.
