south australia subs

went out the other day after a few days solid rain, even raining at the time i was searching (for subs), with no luck. we looked in area looking pretty much like this: and found shit loads of (what i thought were amantias) - that were EVERYWHERE we looked, e.g.: they were spread out like in the above photos over the whole hill we were looking on (which was quite large) (close up, and belly of that middle sucker): why would there be so many of (what i thought were amantias) and no subs? is this the wrong kind of area to be looking? the conditions were pretty much perfect for growth as well.. i was talking to a bloke who found some subs in a different location to us, at around the same time we were looking who told me that it was best to look early in the morning (before the sun has been out for too long) and also that it didnt matter if it had rained recently or not.. true or fibs? so can anyone help me out with some tips for finding subs? anything you find useful, or helped you out when you were first looking.. cheers in advance for any help..

it has to rain for mushrooms to grow.(of course unless you live where its 100%humidity or something) look in horse manure heaps mixed with hay. it could of been possible for you to find them in the enviroment in those pictures, but more likey in a horse pasture/barn. Nice pics though, Good Luck next time, Peace, PF~ P.S.-I dont see any amanitas in any of those pictures. If your thinking that in the 4th picture that is an amanita, you are mistaken it is a Russela.peace

I think he's talking about Australian Ps Subaeruginascens. I know very little about them other than they supposedly grow in woodchips/mulch of eucalyptus... There are plenty of people here who can tell you better than I can. To me, those look like Amanita Muscaria.

I agree, I think they're A. muscaria as well. Russla don't have the white spots.

I don't know. If you blow up the pick, you can see part of a distinct veil behind the groundclutter. Plus there are a couple patches on the top, like Gumby said. The rest probably came off in the rain.

in the 4th picture there is a red mushroom at the very top left hand corner of the picture, that was the mushroom I thought was a russela, and I just supposed the other red mushroom in the bottom right hand corner was the same exact mushroom so I just closed the window before it was done loading,so the only mushroom I saw was the one in the left hand top corner, today I let the whole thing load, and the one at the bottom does in fact look like a muscaria.Sorry about that! Peace, PF~

Actually one_loop it looks like you are in the right area. Look again in the same place about 1 month time when there is heavy rain. Dont worry about the all the melbourne sub posts it rains a lot there so they get them a lot earlier then us. Also its hard to find the correct type of woodchips in parks, gardens, etc in SA for some reason. They are definately in the hills tho

yea cheers tryptonite.
i assumed because of the fantastic climate in victoria they would get early, more frequent, more abundant rainfalls.
and i agree with you on the harder to find woodchips around SA - i cant name one spot.
you had any luck so far this year? ive heard some positive reports, and got a few spots ill be checking this weekend most probably.
does anyone know why there would be so many of those other mushies? especially seeing as there were no others in the area.. ??

Yea, they grow on decaying wood, woodchips etc, and are less common on pine needles. You don't necesserily have to go to a forest to find them. They will be growing a few mins from your house soon. Remember the season has hardly started. more rain is needed.

merkaba they growin minutes from your house because Melbourne has more rain and i read in something about at one year like 1976 (or at one stage ) they done lanscaping and shit and like 80% was woodchips. I read it ages ago so my memorys kinda faded. Here ive scoped many wood beds i dont think of seen any decent ones, those grey ones you Melbournians always find em on dont seem to be here. anyway what are all the types of woodchips, subs been reported on? I pretty sure pine is a light yellow colour when fresh, what are those grey jagged ones are they just aged pine? One_loop i also heard the rare on pine needles. And no the season hasnt started here at all. not that i know of n e way.

I've had a bit of a look around my area after the rain we got but no luck yet. I think they'll be popping up in the hills after a few good days of rain (hopefully this weekend ), it's cold enough up there for them. I'm gonna go up to cleland this weekend to have a look, that's where they were discovered anyway wern't they? You guys think this looks like sub territory? It's 5 mins away from my house so hopefully they pop up!

Looks pretty promising to me chrisss, looks like where I find subs in Victoria... but don't be too disappointed if you don't find any ... for every hundred spots that 'look great for subs' they only seem to grow in a few... those wood-chips look completely untreated though, which is presumably good...

i believe the suburb Cleland is named after JB Cleland who first described and named subs, amongst many other aussie fungi, birds and plants
